Brunsgaard Towing Mirrors on a D4

Hi, I have a 2016 model Discovery 4 which I use for towing my caravan. I purchased a set of Brunsgaard towing mirrors about a year ago and so far I have damaged two mirrors due to them falling off the vehicle. I was wondering what other peoples experience is of these mirrors when fitted to Discovery 3 or 4s

Geday. I use Brunsgaard mirrors, 4 point, on my 2014 RRS. They are the only mirrors that I have found will stay attached to the mirror housing shape.

When I initially fitted mine they fell off. I checked with Kel Oleson who is the importer in WA and he by chance was coming on a flying visit. He called in to home and personally fitted them. His fitting simply involved bending the tab on the mirror stalk such that it hooked in to the outside edge of the mirror surround just clear of the mirror glass. With the tab hooked in the thing would be about impossible to fall off without breaking the mirror surround. I have my van in storage currently with the mirrors sitting in it and can't readily access for a pic of mine. On his website in his gallery I think photo 2 shows the tab. It needs to be bent such that it hooks in behind the plastic of the surround, not just bent to lie across the face of it.

Kels contact is: Contact & Stores He is a most obliging character. He might be able to send you a simple sketch to describe what he did.

    Cheers, Alan

The big issue is making sure your supplier actually gets the right mirrors from Kel. Otherwise problems follow. Like mirrors dropping off. Had the same level of service in Adelaide when Kel dropped by and fitted a new setup after one dropped off between Finke and Alice last year on a very rough track. Setting them up correctly is vital and Kel and I disagree with "tight". His view is firm to me so we have actually lost his version on the freeway from Caloundra a couple of weeks back after picking up our Q+ for its running in trip. My "tight" mirror is still on the LHS after around 50,000km of travel and towing. So wrestling with if I go again as they are so good or look for second best. I have no wish to fit "truck" mirrors which are bloody expensive and well marketed by some TV 4WD shows

I have used them for about two years. They are the best I have ever used. They did take some time to set up, but now I can remove/instal in a couple of minutes. I do tighten them to tight, and apart from one I lost when I didn’t tighten it enough, they have stayed on for over 30,000 Km, many on gravel roads including Great Central Road, outback NSW and NT.

I have attached some images from when I installed a set on a D4 MY2015. The correct combination took a bit of experimentation but it was mostly due to the angle of the horizontal section being bent a little too much. To get the best fit I had to open up the angle on the piece that clamps on the horizontal of the mirror to get it connected correctly. I found Ken very responsive and helpful by email and phone so hope you can resolve the issue quickly.

So far have not had any issues with the mirrors coming loose or vibrating when being passed by oncoming semi trailers.

Hope this helps with your installation.

I purchased 2 Brunsgaard Mirrors a year ago before a trip to the centre. Replacing the Milenco mirrors which I was concerned about how they clamp to top surround of D4 mirror. In spite of my best attachment one of the brand new Brunsgaard mirrors fell off within 300km and was flattened by a following Semi-Trailer.

My solution was simple. One occy strap that effectively turns the 4 point Brunsgaard Mirror into a 5 point attachment mirror. Absolutely rock solid. Can put mirror on in about 15 seconds and only 5 seconds to remove. If I used a black occy strap it might look more elegant but hey, works easy and well. The Brusgaard mirror is much more stable than the Milenco with far less wind buffet. Just have to buy one replacement mirror though. I don't think the standard 4 point attachment is good enough even with the longer arms for the D4 mirror, however, happy with my solution.
