Strange pròblem - rear wheel binding

Hi all. After doing the Old Tele Track in Cape York my mates D3 had a failed rear left airbag or sensor (kept dropping completely on rear left overnight) and then he found the rear left wheel was binding then releasing with a clunk. He could demonstrate it at walking pace and it seemed to do it only with left or right lock but I didn't see him drmonstrate it on the straight.

The wheel would stop turning for a split second then release.

He could also hear a clunk from the centre of the vehicle on shutdown (diff lock problem and wind up?).

Any ideas...it took the boat and is now on a car carrier back to Bris.

    Cheers

After recent service where rear brakes and brake sensor replaced as well as 78,000K service, I experienced a few days later a shuddering in rear. Noticed that a bit of smoke coming from left-rear brake disc area. Happened 3 times. Went back to service agent. Found issue. At service the rear disc rotors were not replaced as they still had plenty on them and hand brake pads adjusted as per schedule.

Found that there was build up of brake dust inside hand-brake drum section of disc rotor. Seems like after hand brake adjustment the excess dust caused extra binding. Replaced rear disc rotors and hand brake shoes (even though they had heaps on them). Problem gone. Next time when rear brakes need replacing might just get discs done as matter of course, not too much extra anyway.

It's also possible he'll have water in the connecters to the transfer case , does he have a gap iid tool or other diagnostics? , he may need to recalibrate the tc .

Does he have a rear ediff? It sounds like a diff issue to me

Thanks guys. I wondered if it might just be water in connectors causing centre diff to lock when it shouldn't. He like me went up a VERY Deep Scrubby Creek (some 30 metres of travelling with water above bonnet height)...

No ediff (his first one had it but was written off in a rear end Collison).

    Cheers

The D4 that was in our party had the handbrake squealing like a locked loco wheel after 20klm of the Old Tele Track but the D3 didn't have any handbrake squeal and seemed to be working properly. Cheers

AFAIK The transfer case doesn't fully lock, it transmits up to 90/10 either direction, so it shouldnt bind up.

Can you describe what the wheel does a bit more? Does it intermittently drag when turning?

Did it happen straight after the creek crossing?

Could it be a bad bearing causing the disk to shift around corners and bind on the calipers?

Rear passenger side wheel turns a half turn or so then actually stops turning for a split second and then releases suddenly and keeps turning - keeps repeating like that. Doesn't sound like the centre diff. I don't recall mine doing that when positively locked so the d3 shouldn't. Wheel bearing?

Sounds to me like a warped disk or worn bearing. My guess is the bearing allows the disk to tilt and its being held by the calipers, or more likely the drum shoes. Cleaning any dust out of the brakes or even adjusting the shoes back a couple of clicks might fix it enough to get him rolling.

If it doesn't happen in a straight line and theres no rear ediff, thats my best guess. Let us know how it goes.

I have experienced an intermittent issue like this on the front. Wheel sensor was what the dealer thought. TC kicks in 'cos it thinks the wheel isn't turning.

It first started happening after driving through a lot of mud and water. They cleaned the sensor and it improved dramatically (it hasn't completely gone away but as I haven't been able to demonstrate to the service guys they don't want to address it...)
