    Noise + burning smell

OK guys, I need some help. Heading to the snow this weekend. Wife just drove into driveway and I could tell that something was wrong - car sounded a bit funny. Also there was a slight burning smell, similar to when my other car's DPF is burning off. No warning lights. 2011 2.7 D4.

Any ideas? I will have a good play around later tonight, but if this is happened to anyone, would love to hear some ideas so I can try and get it fixed tomorrow....

    Cheers

Based on this limited info, my money would be on the alternator being the culprit. Pretty common problem.

I'm heading out to drop it off outside the repair place now, for a look first thing. Rang the local LR dealer to see if they could look at it tomorrow, but they are too busy, despite me getting the car serviced there after warranty....

Is it OK to drive it if the alternator is bung?

Also, I think it is coming from the front of the engine somewhere.

Yep - front left is where the alternator is. You can drive it - but beware that they often die with a short circuit - which will flatten the battery in no time! If left in that way, it will kill your battery.

    Good luck.

And the prize goes to... TuffRR- it was the alternator.

    Over $1,000 to fix......

If I wasn't going to the snow tomorrow I would shop around.....

    Thanks for everyone's help.

    Cheers

Coincidentally mine also failed the day before a snow trip last year. Ended up having to take the other car. Which is an important thing when owning a Land Rover..... have another car.

    Alternator

Look on the bright side of this episode. The alternator failed prior to and not during your trip away with seven people and trailer in tow and if this was the first alternator replacement for the D4 thats is even better.

Enjoy your weekend and forget about the alternator now!!
