    Raised Air Intake install

    hi all,

Having installed 2x safari snorkels on previous model Discovery's (D3), I have just fitted a RAI on my current Disco 4. Very easy to install and much quicker though I know its not a snorkel per se. My question to those who have fitted themselves, as mine was a used unit, is there supposed to be a small gap between the snorkel and the original LR plumbing. When i fit the snorkel to the outside vent, there is a small gap of approx 1inch between it (inner face) and the rubber which attaches to the end of the original LR tubing inside the cavity. I have sealed the RAI onto the guard fine, prob appears to be on the inner face of the RAI which has no attachment points to secure the plumbing. thank you

Did you manage to get this sorted. I’m thinking of fitting a RAI because it’s prettier than the Safari and then adapt it to make it water tight.

    time poor

no, just haven't had the time, i need to pull the RAI off which is easy enough to do then re look at the attachment between the RAI and the original ducting. there is a gap of 1-2inches at moment so drawing air in from the end of the ducting and not up high as it should. let me know how you go with your install.

Fair enough. Without seeing the installation details, is there drilling and cutting required for the RAI?

    no pipes

not sure what you mean but there is no piping as such just affixes to the vehicle with the original LR piping intact

As I understand it the D3 piping inside the guard is perforated and needs to be sealed if you want to use the RAI as a snorkle however the D4 piping is not perforated so does not need to be sealed. On the D4 if the RAI is to be used as a snorkle only the outer section of the RAI needs to be sealed against the air intake on the mudguard.

If you have a 1 -2" gap there is something drastically wrong.

    Hi Garry
From installing my Safari, I don’t believe the standard guard pipe work seals up to the air box, so there’s a risk that water can enter between those two components. One of the tasks when doing the safari install is to seal the new inner guard section to the air box with silaflex. At that point the air box can’t be removed without breaking that seal, something not the case with the standard box.
