    Was it me or fate?

Question; did I cause all my recent d4 issues or was it fate?

Crossing into NT and seeing the 130kph sign, I thought "you rippa, 600Nm here we come!" Cruise control set to 125, 6th gear, 27 degrees outside, 1.8t camper trailer on the back, "we will be at Uluru in a flash." My 2009 d4 with 120k on the clock was pulling like a train. Felt rock solid on the road.

Within 500km the Alternator, plastic coolant junction and intake manifold we broken...

Was it just fate that at 120,000 km, these three fundamental engine bits decided to fail?

Or was it me pushing my car way too hard (like an idiot)?

At 120k, the car has done a lot of city driving and a few big trips up the east coast with a smaller camper. Nothing over 110kph. Should a d4 at this age be able to handle that load?

Nb. I'm paying the price now (dollars, inconvenience, and felling like a bone head) and want to know how carefully I need to treat the machine once it's fixed? I can't afford any more breakages. My opinion of it being a supercar has lost its shine.

aggressive driving of even well prepared cars can see them fail under 1000km (Bathurst for example) -

Mine has regularly sat on those speeds and higher - but not towing 1.8 ton ( even though mine is pretty heavy.)

Hard to know without better knowledge of the history of maintenance of the vehicle.... but I reckon there is a good chance you were just very unlucky.

Intake manifold on the 3ltr and Alternator are not uncommon issues though.....

That's not pushing it, and shouldn't cause any issues. You've just conveniently had many of the common D4 problems crop up at once, which on the upside will save you multiple trips to a mechanic as you'll sort them out all at the same time. If it wasn't now, it was going to happen at some stage in the next 20,000kms IMO.

Tuff's right. These are common faults and come at some point. Sad they came all at once but overall the cars aren't 'that' bad. Chin up, it'll probably be years of happy motoring from this point forward.

It would appear that the manifold is a known issue by landrover, one that they do not want to be widespread as there is a service bulletin that some manifolds were not made to standard
You didn't hear that from me though :-?

I just had my inlet manifold die 2 weeks ago, city driving ($2200 ish) at 97,000kms, 7 years old.

It came back, and 3 days later the alternator died and has now been replaced. ($1100 ish).

Same feelings for me - will much more go wrong and be very expensive to fix? I have been absolutely loving this car to this point, but there are practical financial considerations to take into account.

Common things that may need to replaced shortly if they haven't already (on top of things already listed above):
    • Air compressor
    • Secondary turbo valve
    • Shocks
    • LCA bushes
    • Lower steering column UJ

I've also done a steering rack recently which may not be too common but seems to happen now and then.
