    DPF ??

I've searched the forums for both DPF and Diesel Particulate Filter but nothing found, so I hope I'm using the system correctly.
I have a 2005 Discovery 3 diesel and I want to know if they are fitted with Diesel Particulate Filters.
The car's handbook makes no mention of them.
Can someone clarify this for me please?
    Thanks very much.
    Peter.

I had one of the original D4s in the country AUG 2009 Build with a DPF and had no issues in 4.5 years under various conditions. My wife had a Merc C Series with a DPF for 7 years with no issues at all.

I've heard horror stories about DPF fitted cars but I think there are DPFs and there are DPFs (meaning Mitsubishi and other brands). Haven't European vehicles been running them for decades?

Maybe there weren't enough DPF D4s sold in Australia but have there been many reported D4 DPF faults around the world or on this forum? If so, what were the circumstances, conditions?

Easy way to tell if your car has a DPF .... start it in the garage. If there is close to no smell or a slight sweet smell, you have a DPF .... if it stinks like my 2014 D4 does ... well it has no DPF....LOL. Seriously, it's that simple and obvious.

    Cheers,

    Kev.

I find this DPF discussion quite interesting.
Back in 2010, I ordered a J##p Wrangler 4 door auto diesel. It was one of the very first of the new model range in Australia and I took delivery on Feb 14, 2011.
It was fitted with a DPF.
It broke down 7 hours after taking delivery and was off the road for 4 weeks because of a fault with the DPF!!!!!
I don't own it anymore, but my memory is that the DPF was part of the Eurospec 4 emission system at the time.
Contrary to public opinion, the was nothing that had to be done to the vehicle (no adblue or urea) - the DPF just "did it's thing" as you drove along.
What I find curious is that only now are land rover fitting DPF's on their Australian vehicles!!
After the initial issue with the DPF, nothing else ever happenned with it - the biggest issue was figuring which oil to use - low SAPPS or normal.
I have not followed the Australian diesel emission regulations, so I guess things have changed since my Wrangler was on the road, but to the best of my knowledge, all diesel Wranglers still have DPF's - no so sure about Cherokees and the other models.

Your post might have been out of sync with mine ....2009 Build D4s for Australia had DPF. No idea of what ratio there was to 'with and without' but there were no additives needed for mine either. I'd be certain that Discovery's have been running DPFs for years before that in other countries. I'm unsure how many D4s came to Aus after that with a DPF but I suspect not many. I think adblue is a later addition to meet further regulations.

Like you, I had no issue with my DPF fitted cars but I've heard of destroyed exhaust systems, blown rods, etc., on other brands....god knows how true they (stories) are though....

I imagine moving forward there will be no option but a DPF or replacement technology .... hang on ... aren't Europe banning Diesels soon?

    DPF Issues

I have had experience with 2 vehicles having problems with DPF , both Holdens, a Captiva and a Cruze.
Cruze was serviced by the local dealer and giving frequent warnings about DPF issues then started to give engine problem warnings. After a number of visits the dealer quoted $6,000 just for the replacement filter! The owner took it to another dealer who repaired the faulty sensor on the filter for a couple of hundred $!
The Captiva DPF failed after having done about 5,000 km and it was off the road for 10 days waiting on a replacement. Then at about 150,000 Km the seal on the turbo leaked oil into the exhaust and killed the DPF. Replacement cost was again quoted at approx. $6,000. Other options explored were having it dismantled and cleaned by a mob in Sydney (approx. $2,000) or having a straight through pipe installed in the DPF and the ECM reprogramed to believe that all was fine! (approx. $2,400). The owner decided to have the straight though pipe installed to prevent any further issues.

All new diesels now have to have DPF - I think that changed at the start of this year
