    Oil Leak Transfer Box/Gear Box?

    Morning all.

I noticed a couple of largish oil spots on the drive the other morning.

Got underneath, removed the undershield, cleaned all the oil up. It seems to be dripping from this plug but i'm not sure what's behind it and what's causing the leak.

    Car is 2008 SE 4.0 V6 Petrol.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks

Not familiar with your vehicle model but that looks like the bellhousing it is coming from. Did it look like engine oil? Might be a leaking rear main seal.

You dont say what engine/gearbox you have - assuming it is a TDV6, has the engine filter been changed recently? Oil can spill and then run down the and drip from the bell housing area.

Sorry Guys, I've edited the original post to include car details.

    2008 SE 4.0 V6 Petrol.

The oil hasn't been changed recently.

I'm not sure if it is engine oil or Transmission/gearbox fluid? How would I be able to tell?

Do you know what's behind that plug? I don't think it's a drain plug as there is no bolt/allen head to undo it. The plug also moves around in the hole.

    Cheers

Its just the torque converter behind that plug. Its just rubber and can pull straight out. Leak will be either engine or trans. You should be able to tell which it is from the smell of the oil. If its engine oil I would say rear main leak, trans would likely be the input seal athough it could also be a leak from the torque converter itself

Thanks for the reply, I tried to compare the smell against some engine oil and couldn't tell if it smells the same or not!

Either way it sounds like the transmission needs to be removed? There's an authorised ZF repairer fairly near me so I think I'll take it there and get them to look at it.

Apart from the metal pan conversion is there anything else I should get them to do while it's apart?

    Car has 210k on it.
