    Viscous Fan clutch not engaging

My new to me 05 HSE TDV6 had AC issue with not getting cold. Was told new compressor required. Went to local auto elec it had very little gas so vacuumed and refilled.

Started car and AC pressure climbed so shut down. Grabbed work shop fan placed in front of car and started up AC went ice cold and pressure in system normalised so no blockage and compressor working.

Viscous fan does spin on startup however can be stopped by hand. On reflection had noticed that fan would not roar on startup like 08 d3 and does not roar on hot days or when working hard.

Is there any way to test if it is fan or electrical issue without scan tools.

Any greasy oil around fan cover? If there is its a good chance that the fan has failed. I would replace it as if it is not functioning correctly there are dire consequences that can happen ( cooked oil and motor failure)

The oil I think is still ok. There is still moderate friction when you spin the fan.

The fan cycling and revs can be seen with the Gap tool.

Any faults logged will also be there.

The fan is viscous with electric override.

It will roar on first start up when cold, which is a self test, and normal.

Cant help you with testing it,sorry,to determine if it is faulty.

Cheers scarry, It definitely doesn’t roar like my old d3 would. So I assume the electric override is not working. Would the gap tool be able to diagnose whether it’s the fan or or other electrical.

That alone is telling me that the viscus hub is faulty

Hub may not be faulty only missing the rather expensive oil you need to refill it. Yours is showing the classic signs of no oil. FYI this oil works in reverse of engine oils. It gets thicker when hot to spin the fan

Don't know, hopefully someone will chime in.

Could be the oil,or the electrical part of the fan itself,or the signal from the vehicle that drives the fan.

Isn't progress a wonderful thing, All I have got in my D2 is a viscus fan that kicks in when the engine is too warm.
No fancy electronics gizmo's in it just functionality and reliability, Pretty booring Eh

    Umm,no its not that simple.
It also has an electric fan that operates at certain temperatures, and road speeds, when the AC is on,and also if the engine temp is very high.
That fan is controlled by fancy electronics......
