Coolant Hose cut by Engine Cover

This has been mentioned in other threads but doesn't seem to have its own thread. There appears to be a reasonably high proportion of D4s where the coolant hose and engine cover are so close together that the hose is abraded and eventually cut. There are reports of the issue being caused by an incorrectly fitted engine cover but that doesn't seem to be a confirmed cause. For example, in my Dad's case the engine cover was fitted correctly and the hose was still partially cut but mine had quite a good gap between hose and cover. So the message is go and have a look.

UPDATE: this hose is for the TDV6 3.0L engine. Other hoses can be an issue for other engine variants.

I know some people have removed the engine cover or cut back the edge near the hose but I'm trialing a length of split transmission hose as a protective edge. This cost me $2.50 from SCA for 50cm. The only issue could be if it vibrates off.

    Cheers,
    Scott

Same thing here, but, lra have a revised hose which has more sleeving on it, but, you still need to cut the cover as well as there is quite a bit of movement there when the motor load s up

Some sikaflex will hold that piece of hose on to the engine cover for good.

For those with the 2.7 there is a coolant hose that runs very close to the AC pully.

The bracket that holds up the hose is not the best.

    Paul,

For those of us who are a little mechanically challenged as to what an AC pulley looks like, should we (I) start by looking on the driver or passenger side as we peer into that mysterious part of the car under the bonnet?

    thanks

    Ian

Passenger side of vehicle, front of engine, look for the serpentine belt(fan belt),you will see the pulley for the AC compressor.

A good torch will be helpful, and take the engine cover off to make it easier to see,if you want.

You will notice a small coolant hose that runs about a finger width above the pulley.

It runs back to a clip that attaches to the rocker cover.

The clip comes loose or breaks, then the hose moves down onto the pulley

It happened to me last year. While I was fixing the hose with some tape it I cut out the cover so it's nowhere near the hose and got the hose replaced under warranty.

    which hose is this ?

    hi all,

had a quick look today at engine bay. just to clarify could someone outline which hose we are talking about.
pic 1 - is where mine is rubbing on a smaller hose at rear of engine
pic 2 - where is this hose that needs the cover cutting
pic 3 - looking down on the other hose clip described above for the pulley, which bracket please
pic 4 - intercooler hose, this is not the culprit ?

thanks, just thought with pics maybe easier to locate above hose problem

Check clearance of soft pipes to wheel below in this location. Make sure there is a few mm clearance and gently nip up the retainer bolts.
