    Fill it first

    Usual trick with most diesels is to mostly fill the filter with diesel before refitting. Eliminates bleeding, engine sometimes has a wee stutter a little after starting, but runs it off.

    I just cycled the key a few times then started it and let it run for a few minutes.

    As long as you’re putting the diesel into the tank side of the filter. It takes bugger all grit to destroy one of these common rail pumps.

    As others have noted.

    *you should not fill the filter before installing.
    *cycle the ignition, it may take quite a few times. (as in ignition on count to 30 seconds, then ignition off, repeat)
    *you can listen for the gurgling sound to stop after numerous ignition cycles.
