My D3 is running General grabber GT's. Fabulous road tyres - very happy. However, I left the rotation too long previously and currently have about 35% left on front and 5% on the rears (in fact one of the rears is very worn on the edge and pretty much at the wear indicators = not legal).
I dont want to throw away the fronts as they have maybe 10K left in them but I am concerned about running new GT's on the rear and worn on the front. What is the real world deal on this? Can we mix tyre wear or do we HAVE to replace all 4 tyres at the same time?

All of the wear to the rear tyres occurred whilst they were on the front. I recently changed front to back. The wear on the edge of what was the front left is most likely due to road camber. I just left these tyres on the front for 30K and the front naturally wears more than the back due to steering. I will be more vigilant with rotating the next set!
Hi Mk1,
I've had the same discussion in the past with a very knowledgeable landrover mechanic and he was very adamand that the D3 drivetrain really dosen't like different rolling diameters on the car. He greatly stressed that the extra work on the diffs and computers etc was not worth the price of 2 new tyres. Also if you have unven wear on your rear tyres you may want to consider checking your rear control arms/bushes. Workshops love telling people that they almost never replace them but excess wear on the inside of rear tyres MAY BE a sign of worn rear control arm bushes.
In short not worth running 2 worn tyres on the vehicle, save them for the trailer.
safe travels
LOL, ok so disregard all that I said about the rear bushes. Where are you travelling to? I'm in eastern Vic at the moment and have 4 265/65/17 tyres still on the old rim that have about 3-5mm of tread left on them you are welcome to have to run out the last of the old tyres if you are over this way. They are coopers AT3's NB they are legal however the rubber is as hard as, hence on wet bitumen they are not very good.![]()
Thanks for the offer Nomad. I have just booked the car in for 4 new tyres tomorrow
Heading from Adelaide to Mansfield.
FWIW, I clipped a gutter edge going through one of those "S" type slowing devices a while back. When next at the dealers for a service I asked them to look at it and do a wheel alignment. They assured me that the bump would not have damaged the suspension etc. They sent me to a local JAX tyre shop. End result was the car pulling slightly to the left and scrubbing the edge of the tyre. At the next service (I do a 6 month oil change) they said the pulling to the left was not an issue. I got an Indy to do the 6 month oil change next time and he did a wheel alignment. Car now runs straight as a die, much better, and exactly like when new. Long winded story, but the scrubbing you're experiencing maybe be a wheel alignment issue. No more uneven wear since the Indy alignment.
