To really know you need to read the error codes associated with your suspension. However, your suspension compressor is most likely a bit tired and the drier probably partially blocked. The result being it does not bring the system up to pressure within the required time frame - possibly why you get warning lights which go away after a few start cycles.
When it does finally get up to pressure its hot and bothered and wants a rest - possibly why you sometimes get "Special features unavailable normal height selected"
It is a fairly common problem with vehicles with some age on them. LR will not sell parts to overhaul the compressor, only the complete new compressor at a cost you probably don't wont to know about.
However, you can buy kits to overhaul and refurbish the compressor from 3rd parties for less than $150, for instance:
For Land Rover Discovery 3 4 Range Rover Sport Hitachi Air Compressor Repair | eBay
You need only basic tools and skills to carry out the overhaul using this kit. You will find detailed videos on the internet of how to go about it plus there some threads in AULRO on the compressor overhaul. Is your vehicles air suspension rising slowly, noisily, or perhaps failing to rise at all? EAS Amber light lit? Fault code C1A20, C1A1364, C50, or C1A20-64 showing? One or more of these errors: 'Suspension error only normal height available' 'Suspension fault; pressure not rising quick enough' Or 'Pressure does not decrease when venting gallery'?
I have used the kit - it's very good.
Now having said all the above, in my experience, these kinds of compressor problems do not on their own cause the vehicle to go into limp mode. So there are other factors at play here. Somebody in your area may have an error code reading tool which might help in pointing you in the right direction.
