    19” Tyres for D4

    Thanks,

Based on what I’ve read here and in the Maxxis thread (thanks Scott) I’ve decided to go with the Maxxis 980AT’s over the Coopers.

Pirellis not suitable for what I want, Wranglers too dear (in 111S rating best price was 560 a corner + F&B!) I want just tyres, not to buy the tyre shop...).

Coopers were quoted at 415 each, the Maxxis at 375 each from my local Tyrepower store.

They also mentioned their warehouse has over 50 units in stock of that size here in WA, so I’m confident in being able to get replacements should that be required (unlikely from what I’ve read).

so thanks again and I’ll let you know how it goes off the beaten track and on the black stuff.

Another vote for the Maxxis - we completed a 20,000km "half lap" last year in our D4 loaded up with wife & 2x kids towing a Kimberley Kamper - up the centre, down the west and across the bottom including Finke River NP, Bungle Bungles, GRR, Mitchell Falls, Munja Track, Cape Leveque etc..... Still running the same set on the car back here in Melbourne with another 15,000KM added since then (mostly road use, but a couple of rough trips into the High Country). Probably only got another 10,000km left in them, but they did get pretty chewed up dragging all that weight over the savage rocky Munja Track. They're a bit noisy, but so is our roof platform...

you should get a better price than that for the Maxxis 980 -

2nd set just went on, found them better than Coopers (had 2 sets of these previously)

What size Maxxis are people fitting to get that bit extra depth especially for when driving on sand? I'm thinking of getting a full set of 5 and just destroying the original tyres as there's doesn't appear to be market for them at all.
And no way will I pay 6 bucks to the tyre retailer supposedly to dispose of them and they then flog them off to someone who wouldn't buy them off me.
But I want to know the max/best size for the Maxxis for all round purposes.
    Thnx.

The only viable size in 19” is the stock 255/55/R19. You may be able to get 255/60/R19 which is close to 31” but I think availability and selection is even worse.

Any chance you could tell me where? I’ve tried and the best I’ve been able get is $348. I’ve seen prices as low as $280, but I believe that’s for 17” or 18”

    cheers, Eric

Eric, Try calling Bryn at Richards Tyrepower in Osborne Park, he got me 6 of the Maxxis for about $1700, fitted and balanced.

What size did you get Greg? Did you stick with the 255/55/19 or go a bit bigger?
    Cheers.

I just stayed with the standard size Alan, 255/55/19s. I took them up the Gibb (moderately gnarly), Charnley River (quite gnarly), Mitchell Falls track (very very gnarly) and they were fine, no chips or cracks at all. Generally ran them on those tracks at about 28psi. I've left them on the car since then, taken the car down the Three Bears track from Sugarloaf to Yallingup a couple of times (lots of sharp limestone) and still no damage to either tyres or rims. I'm guessing I'll get maybe 50,000km out of them.

Thought I'd throw my two bobs in.

    I wouldn't recommend the General Grabber AT3's.

I had one split right next to the bead during some very easy sandy track driving (between Seabird and Guilderton).
They were at 25psi and I had them for less than 4 weeks.

Continental (owners of General) didn't want to warrant the tyre.

I think my next set will be Maxxis...

    Martin.
