    D4 emitting blue smoke — help ;-(

About a month ago while towing a trailer (prob 1.5t) I saw a cloud of blue smoke in the rear view mirror as I accelerated reasonably confidently (probably at 60% of full pedal down).
My stomach turned and I slowed right down and continued on my way gingerly for the next 1hr to get me home. I put it down to a Disco quirk and didn’t lose much sleep.

So this morning, towing same trailer up a hill and mild acceleration and same thing happens.
All seems ok again though now trailer is off, so it does only occur when the engine is under strain.

I’m guessing the blue smoke is burning oil (or diesel?) but anyone else had this? Or any suggestions what it could be?

Vehicle is a 3.0l 2011 SE twin turbo

    TIA!

Yes. You need to check whether the turbo drain upgrade has been done. This is a known issue with the early twin turbo models. I recently did mine myself and it resolved it. It’s engine oil being sucked into the turbo as the drain doesn’t work well enough in the original setup. Have a search. There’s heaps on this topic.

Just did one last month. DO NOT forget to drain the intercooler at the drivers side lower pipe!! Stand back when pulling it off, abd have a drain tin handy. You'd be surprised how much oil is accumulating in there😣

Justin, is this normal for later models with the updated turbo drain from factory or just caused by inferior earlier turbo drain?

Use the Google search at the bottom of every page in the forum. Earlier threads:

    Blue smoke
3.0 D4 using oil and blue smoke

Im guessing early non modified ones Scott. Certainly can get a little anyway but the cascade of oil was surprising with the one i had that was excessively Smokey. It was bad enough yhat i took a pic for my rogues gallery😅
