    ECU Software Updates

I just spoke to my local dealer to see if Land Rover covers software updates under warranty. I was thinking at my next service, the dealer can do all the updates before my warranty runs out. They are not covered. They are only covered if a fault has occurred and the fix is to update. Well, that what the dealer said anyway. No matter whether this is correct or not, I was wondering whether anyone here keeps their car's software up to date and how. I have a GAP tool and believe you can update via their Fastlane service, but should I? Could I stuff it up big time?

    My car is a D4 MY16.

I updated all of mine using Gaps Fastlane service.

It can get a little expensive at £25 per ECU but I’m like that and just want the latest firmware in each unit.

I didn’t need to do it with most, the Terrain Response update to the later better version was my primary reason, but went with all updates just because I could.

In reality, if it’s working fine, then it may not be worth it, I just did it because I could at the time.

Was there any ECU you updated that made a significant (or at least noticeable) difference Tombie?

If you own an IIDTool, you can scan exactly which versions are in every ecu and the guys at Gap Fastlane are great at advising which may be of use...

When I scanned mine back in April last year this was the result below.

I sent it to them for advice and later the same day got this reply:

The suspension ECU can be updated with theHitachi or AMK version which is why you see an update possible. It shall beleft alone.
I would leave the rest alone also. Theypretty much fix all the glitches on the D3 so the D4 does not benefit as muchfrom updates.

    Pretty impressive service I thought.

( Note I already had the current Terrain Response firmware)

Updates are not covered under warranty and not loaded unless there is an issue which needs an update. This is pretty much the same for all manufacturers.

Given mine is a 2016 model I guess updating is probably not worthwhile but my next question is, where can you get information about the differences (enhancements) that are made in each version? I do not subscribe to Topix.

I'm not sure it would be documented anywhere but in releases from Land Rover. ( I don't think subscribing to Topix makes much financial sense unless you are working on them regularly or a short subscription to get hold of something specific.) I think you would find that 99% of updates are simply bug fixing rather than any additional functionality, particularly when you are talking about the end of a model range.

They want you to buy a D5 > so they're not going to give you new features in your D4 firmware.

If you scan yours with an IIDTool, you will get a similar output to what I listed above - you can see if indeed there are any ECU's for anything significant that are not up to the latest.
