Currently watching 60 minutes and it's throwing back memories of when my grandad nearly lost his only functioning eye to my Discovery 3 airbag. The airbag did not have the problem like they are talking about, but it did send shards of the plastic airbag casing flying into his eye, luckily it only scratched the cornea.
I've worn sunglasses whenever i drive during the day since, that's all it takes to protect yourself, and who wants to drive without sunnies anyway.
In my opinion, they're set to go off too early, and it seems to be for all cars. The police on this show mentioned how catastrophic a girls death was for such a minor crash (was left front damage to the guard and headlight only).
Another guy travelling at 9mph lost his eye.
I hit a hangaroo, did next to no structural damage to the car accept for a slightly bent radiator mount, both fronts went off.
No airbags are safe enough to trust with our priceless and irreplaceable eyes, especially when a $50 pair of glasses could save them.

The thread has already drifted somewhat, so I'll throw in my 2 bobs worth.
Yesterday I was unlucky enough to be at a fatal crash north of Adelaide.
A car entered a highway without giving way, and a car, travelling at 100kph went straight into the driver side of the entering car.
Airbags in the car doing 100kph meant the driver walked (crawled) away with bloodied face and severe seatbelt rash, plus severe shock.
Driver of other car died at scene and passenger airlifted to hospital in critical condition.
Without airbags, the lady in the car would have also been killed. Her eyes were fine.
The girl who died was only 17 years old
It will be a while before the images leave me.
