Well, picked up the blue top - optima swapped my deep cycle yellow for a starter blue top, believing them to be the same... (or rather, claiming they are to be rid of me)

    I give up.

For sale for anyone in Perth, brand new d34 blue top. Look it up on Gumtree if interested :-)

I think they are the same battery inside, the difference is the extra terminals. I meant to buy a marine one last time I bought an optima as I thought the extra terminals would be useful for attaching a compressor. But I forgot and bought the yellow top and the blue ones are not held in stock at the place I buy batteries from. If its single shop rather than a franchise, that would likely mean a special order would come straight from the distributor, which is a benefit although less so for a good AGM battery.

    From OPtima

"Note: The difference between BLUETOP and YELLOWTOP deep-cycle batteries is that BLUETOP batteries have both automotive (SAE) posts and threaded studs, while YELLOWTOPS (other than D31T) only have SAE terminals."

"If you ever get confused about the colored tops, just remember: If it has a dark gray case, then it’s a starting battery; if it has a light gray case, then it’s a deep-cycle (dual-purpose) battery."

So they should be the same - as long as they have the same shade of grey case.

The Blue top are technically a marine version of the yellow top with posts and threaded. I used to have one, absolutely the worst Deep Cycle Battery I have had, would never have another one or any Optima for that matter. Overpriced POS..

I have two Optima blue tops in the D1. The starting battery is over ten years old (US made) and no issues. The aux is about two years old (Mexican) and similarly performing well, so far. No fancy stuff, just a manual disconnect if I want to isolate but 99% of the time they are hard linked.

I also have a yellow top in the Rangie Sport as the aux. Traxide kit, so essentially always linked. Starting battery is an SSB AGM. No issues there either, but only about 18 months in service so far.

I personally reckon the SSBs represent very good value for money and energy density as the entire "brick" is used.

Does anyone know the SSB model that’s a direct replacement for the D4 H3/G14 spec battery? I looked but couldn’t find one myself

Bingo - I now have a dark case, where I originally had a light case. A starter battery :-/

Then they sold you the wrong battery, is up to them to replace at their expense including return shipping.
