Tyres (again)...confusion

For those not happy with their Cooper AT3’s it’s worth remembering that there are two types. One is light truck construction and the other isn’t (and is intended for on-road use). They look the same so unless you have the letter LT at the beginning of the tyre size moulded on the tyre then you are running a highway type tyre with very limited off/gravel road use recommended. They are a much lighter construction and could account for your punctures.
Additionally there is the issue of tyre pressures - especially on gravel. Cooper recommend a range of 32-36 psi on fast gravel and even less on slower gravel. A commensurate reduction in speed is also recommended.
I think it’s unfair to blame any tyres for punctures when you’re not saying exactly what tyre you are running, at what pressure and in what conditions and acknowledging your speed at the time.

Hey Mike, if you remember, can you take a pic of your Falkens on the car. I’ve pretty much decided on these, but still haven’t been able to go see a set and get a price in person.
Hoping to do that this week, but works looking a bit busy as it’s the final week of moving.

I haven’t gone right into it yet, but they look to be about $325 a corner online so far [bighmmm]

I have fitted a set of 245/70/16 Micky Thompson Baja ATZ P3's to my D2a because I wanted the 1300kg load rating and the extra grip for dirt/gravel/mud boat ramps, I haven't used these tyres before But the initial impressions are good although the tyres ARE noisy.
I will come back to this post after I have done a few thousand K's to evaluate them.

This may be a little late for you, however. I've just fitted 4 265/60x18 Hankook RF10 to my Disco 3. $275 each fitted & balanced at my dealer in Coffs Harbour.Too early to report much at this time on the Disco except that they are quite & improved the road feel out of sight.
We've had them on the wife's Hyundai Terracan CRDI for around 18 months & done 40k. This is similar in weight & size to the Disco. They are wearing very well, rotated every 10k & pressures kept at 40psi, barely any signs of wear. They are good in the wet or dry & everytime my wife drives up or down the Dorrigo mountain I keep my seatbelt on tight as she has got to know it really well & goes faster than me.
They have a 114 Load Rating & a T speed rating which is under the specified speed rating. Some people will worry about this however if an incident occurs it has to be proved that it was caused by a tyre of underrated speed rating. These were the cheapest good tyre I or my dealer could find.

I am getting some Falken AT3W 265/60/18's fitted tomorrow on a buy 3 and get the 4th free deal from the local Falken rep. Will see how these pan out vs my older D697's.

The Terracan, they weigh 2065kg kerb weight against the LR at 2640kg (which is the Terracan at GVM).

I had an old Mazda that I had for years went through multiple set of tyres from different manufacturers. Not a puncture.

Bought a new car new tyres of course. In two months had 2 punctures from tech screws from different places.

So where the tyres on the Mazda great and the ones on the new car crap or was I just unlucky?

So when you hear “I had brand X for 80 000ks with no problems. I changed to brand Y and staked 2 tyres on 1 trip. I’ll never buy brand Y again”.

Take it with a large grain of salt.

I bought a Bridgestone 697 , 265/65x17LT, in Olympic Dam last year for $295 balanced and they fitted it for me.

Why you guys are paying $350 for them in big number city outlets has me stumped.

btw , Olympic Dam(think Roxby Downs )is really out bush except for it's magnificent highway from the south.....after that its genuinely bush.

oh btw , when I changed over to the xlt mag wheels last year, a Bridgestone dealer in Brisbane offered me 4 off , 697's 265/65x17 including the xlt wheels all up $1200.

xlt mag wheels abound as so many want different wheels when they purchase their Rangers there are hundreds of wheels left hanging around dealerships.
