    D4 blowing a bit of smoke, phut phut sound but no warning messages.

    Hi all

    Have a D4 SDV6. Just got home tonight after a weekend trip. About 25 kms from home a nice driver flagged me down and said I had smoke from the rear. He said Land Rovers shouldn't do that :-)

    Anyhow at night can't see any probs under the bonnet so took it the last 25 kms at 50 km/h. Not as much smoke but a bit and the exhaust has a phut phut phut sound which increases with the revs. Still changes gears OK, can't tell if I have less power as only took it at 50 km/h. Oil level is OK at 70%. Engine temp is OK. No warning messages on the dash at all. At night still so I don't know what the colour of the smoke is.

    What are your suggestions as to what has possibly gone wrong? I'm currently looking at the many posts in this forum on smoke :-) That could take me quite some time.

    Could be a number of things. First thing I would check is your intercooler hoses to see if any have a split, which is quite common.
    Life is just a series of obstacles preventing you from taking a nap.

    Hi all

    Intercooler hoses ... Okies that suggestion helps me to search for more specific things so I find like:
    Intercooler Hose

    Code:
    air filter  --->  turbo --> intercooler --> inlet manifold  --> cylinders
    A split intercooler hose would explain the phut-phut sound, I'd presume that would be the compressed air being pushed out. The smoke though, the only origin for that would be from the turbo, and it leaking from that hose? Will search a bit more online. I'll have to learn a lot more as this is my first diesel car with a turbo or two.

    I have just dropped it off at a repair place that the dealer uses (they know LRs and its still just within 5k warranty period).Most interestingly and a bit confusing for me is that over the 20 km trip it did not blow smoke or have the phut phut sound! I only did 60 km/h though. I would not have thought such a problem could vanish. Will be interesting if they find any messages when interrogating the vehicles computer.

    The smoke will be the vehicle expecting a certain amount of air and fuelling as such.
    When it doesn’t get all the air - you run rich and see the smoke out the back!

    "you run rich and see the smoke out the back!" Now that smoke is what my younger bro complained bitterly about with his RRS Autobio . Absolutely hated it and the stealer couldn't suggest a fix for the problem.
    It was "my first diesel and the last" he says and LR lost a customer because of it. He bought a petrol Bentley V12 to replace it......

    PS. Further to the above, he went to a recommended independent in Sydney about the prob. and was so appalled by the attitude and appearance of the 2 oiks that were in the front office, he walked out.
    He told me that if any member of his company had treated a possible customer in the same fashion, they'd have been looking for another job very quickly.

    In my context it would be no different where a Petrol turbo has measured X amount of Air passing its intake and fuelled accordingly.

    Then the air bleeds off from a leak, causing the engine to run rich and blow smoke.

    Fixing the leak will resolve the problem.

    All diesels give a little puff when the boot is sunk, so do High output petrols with forced induction. In the case of your younger brother, if his RRS was an urban runner it was probably soot build up from urban running.

    He obviously didn't want to go off-roading ...… oh or did he buy a Bentayga … LOL. Aren't they a 'W' 12?

    The only time he went "off road" was into country pubs for a meal or his 4 car garage. No Betanyga for him but a rather nice sedan.

    Hi all

    Okies, now I understand why the smoke occurs if its running rich.

    Phoned the repair place today that it was in for them to look at. They said its a oil separator that had failed. Will find out more details when I pick up the car.
    Did a bit of looking up on oil separators and came across this V8 Oil separator replacement in photos.. That's for a P38 but PeterH's PDF showed it so well on this site.

    Hi all

    On Friday they replaced the oil separator which they said was clogged and also cleaned the air filter. They said the previous owners probably just drove it in the metropolitan area and that now I should have a bit more power, not that I had thought it was under powered. This was all covered by the dealer. So its all nice again. My wife and I do a bit over 500 kms each weekend, mainly on highways at 80 to 90 km/h.
