Thank you for the info on the Michelin as it is the info I wanted. I am booked in next week for a set of 5 Lattitude Tour as I want a pure road tyre as I have a second set of wheels shod with Maxxis 980.
I will be swapping out TOYO H/T open Country which have been good average tyres.

I've had mine back on for the last few months when I've been only driving in the city. I'd forgotten how quiet they are and the handling is good in all conditions,
keeping in mind that I drive conservatively in the wet so haven't pushed their handling through wet corners etc.
There may well be better HTs out there in 19" but the Wrangler should be on the list for bitumen-only use IMO.

The OEM Wranglers are really quiet, smooth and very grippy in the wet and dry ... even after a bit of wear. I'm still running a set on my recent D4. They've lasted a lot longer than on my first car, because I have a second set of wheels.

They do have a few cons though IMO ....

    • they could probably be a bit firmer in the sidewall. I didn't really notice it until I switched to Scorpions ATRs in my old D4. I much preferred the more precise handling of the Scorpion. In so saying though, the Wranglers aren't really bad ... just could be a bit firmer in my opinion.
    • They are or certainly used to be a tad expensive (~$500 a corner when I looked in 2010)... but maybe prudent shopping now would fix that. Just did a quick google search - $315 for the 255/55/19 ... so they have dropped a fair bit since I first looked. Probably more options now .. meaning healthy competition.
    • I've experienced and many have reported that they get puncture prone after 40 - 50Ks. Probably not an issue if you are 100% hardtop but I blew two tyres in a matter of days (well actually three but the first was a tec screw …. so just unlucky) when traversing graded, good quality forestry tracks out near Banarkin State Forest. Stones just went straight through the tread block. Maybe wouldn't have happened if the tyres were running sub 30psi but the road was in very good nick. I'd driven over a lot rougher with no issue when the tyres were new.

Agree. I got two small punctures after 40Ks and going off-road. One so small and with a very slow leak that I couldn’t find it, but made it the spare and kept the air compressor in the boot. The other occurred at pace on a gravel road at 40psi, which whilst repairable, was the signal to upgrade.

The wranglers can still handle the rough stuff, but you need to slow down, pick your lines and be prepared to risk scuffing them up as the compound is soft and the limited grip (ie due to the small tread blocks) causes the tyre to loose traction and spin sooner.

Handling in the wet weather is fine.

And yes, they are quiet! Just getting used to the constant humm of the Maxxis.

They also appear to bag out a lot (given the psi) which may explain the damage to sidewalls.
Mine ride and handle really well, but I too have one or two concerning sidewall cuts that I'm keeping an eye on. The tread itself is wearing really well and evenly - no need for rotation after over 10k km

Thanks for the pointers everyone. I now have some reading/window shopping to do, but at least I have a list to work from.

I admit I'm leaning toward the Michelin Latitude Tour, but will have a good look at all suggested boots before making a decision.

The Wrangler 255/55/19 OEM tyres that came fitted to my D4 MY12 were a great road tyre. Lasting 47K, when I changed them before a big trip. They also performed well when towing our 3T caravan. Additionally they were great on the beach and dirt roads. I changed to the more aggressive Cooper Zeons because I'm now driving more in Central and Western Australian back roads whilst towing.

I have a set of Compomotives shod with D697s (265/60 18) for offroad use. My daily HT tyres are Wranglers and I'm also very happy with dry and wet grip and very low noise.

Pricewise I waited until a special discount came up on ebay and bought 4 for $915 from Tempe Tyres mid last year (and no, they weren't old stock - this was raised at the time). Currently listed for $227 with a 10% deal bringing them down $204 plus $15 shipping to Coffs. Of course fitting locally will have a cost attached. I know price isn't your main driver but just info to assist. This is a great price for a good tyre. GOODYEAR Wrangler HP All Weather 255/55R19 111V 255 55 19 SUV 4WD Tyre 5452000965790 | eBay

I thought the V8 would overpower them but have been surprised how good they are. Quiet, smooth and very good grip wet and dry. They are available in your size as well.
+1 for the Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season, great road tyre (same cannot be said for Pirelli Scorpion ATR , which gets skittish in the wet )
Also like the Bridgestone D697, but from memory I do not think they come in anything bigger than size 18.

    That's a really good price.

Did I read somewhere that they have improved the Wrangler?

+ 1 for the OEM Wranglers

Mine have done c. 43,000 km since new, the fronts have chipped quite badly although I could probably get another 2-3,000 km's out of them with a rotation as the back still have a few mm left. I have just bought a new set from tyresales.com.au which came to $892 inc fitting.

Car spends 98% of it's time on road, some towing (1800kg van) and some - not enough! - off road - Double Island / Mt Mee / Gordon Country type off road. I toyed with the idea of going for an AT tyre however grip in the wet on road, durability for extended highway kms coming up and quietness swayed me just to replace the Wranglers.

Regarding wheel alignment - are there any tricks to this in a D4 or can the average tyre place do them? I thought I read somewhere on here there is a 'wheel alignment mode' in the steering / computer options
