Have you had lots of dirt in your drums? If not, then in theory if you dont use the drive through function then they should last forever.

Gday All,
Will be doing a full brake disc and pad change in the coming month or so and guess whilst the rear discs are off I will put new hand brake shoes on . Done a quick search and they all seem to be international sellers, anyone bought local and can recommend .
Thanks and cheers Ean

Not exactly sure that’s perfectly correct. If you read the data in the workshop manual you’ll find that the handbrake system performs some actions that may also cause wear. I recall reading that upon set off, the system will tension the brake such that it is closer to the disc. I recall that the concept was to decrease engagement time when used on the road such as hill starts, traffic lights etc. I’d presume as part of this process wear is introduced. I’ll find the description and post it.

Gday Garry,
We don't use the drive through function and would be doubtful about the dirt , it was more that I didn't want to pull it down , find they were knackered and wait a week till the new ones arrived. My best guess is they will have plenty of meat left on them , but been caught out before guessing and assuming.
Cheers Ean
I thought that might have been your thinking and given the possible timeframe in sourcing new items if they are needed, I guess you dont want your car off the road for long.
I did my front brakes a couple of weeks back (replacing the wear sensor was the biggest PITA) and have got to do my rear brakes soon - was intending to not worry about the handbrake shoes - might rethink that.

I went through this exercise the other month and gave up. I noticed Rover Parts had the kit for about $200 + shipping. I wound up ordering a set for around $50 + shipping from the UK for about half that, delivered in about 5 days. I can recommend both Advanced Factors, Rimmer Brothers and Island 4x4 having bought from them previously.
I like supporting local where I can, but that’s a whole lot of beers to be buying someone else!
Cheers,
— Andrew
PS: the job isn’t hard, once you’ve got your head around how. I found the other side took a quarter of the time of the first once I knew what I was doing. Once you work out how to lever the shoe around into place, it’s pretty easy.
Ean - have you got Bodsy's Brake Bible to give you the good info on this??

Just been reading up on it for when I do mine.
