    issues with changing gears

Hi I'm hoping you can help me.

    I recently purchased a 2013 discovery 4 with close to 70,000 Kilometers.
After having it for a day I noticed that the gear would occasionally stick on 2nd and not change into 3d until the RPM was at around 4.5k
I have video recorded this event on my phone and noticed that the gear indicator on the display panel goes from D to D2 and then back to D when it changes into 3rd.
During all of this I do not touch the gear selector or the manual change (+&-) behind the steering wheel.
This event happens randomly and I can't pick any sequence or condition that will trigger it.
It did happen around 6 or 7 times in the couple of days we had it.
I've taken it back to the dealer (withheld for now) who have said they want to see the fault occur themselves before sending it to a service centre.
I know I'm not hitting the paddles behind the steering wheel accidentally because if I did it would stay in the mode where it displays the gear number eg D2,D3 etc. - but it goes back to D by itself.
Have you seen this before? Have you any thoughts?

Firstly, I am certainly not a trained technician and so these are only suggestions to try and help.

The gearbox as I understand from previous threads learns your driving style and it can be reset using a GAPIID tool for example but I wouldn't do this unless the dealer refuses to co-operate in case they try and put the blame back on you. Possibly whoever owned it drove in a weird way, who knows? Also, I would try it in Sports mode as a trouble shooting exercise to see if the behavior is the same. No doubt someone with real expertise will comment shortly.

The gearbox does 'learn' but that gear change sounds a bit odd.

I don't think you necessarily need the diagnostic tool unless the adaption software is faulty.

When my box gets a bit lazy or silly I've found a good thumping in sports mode can shake it up a bit. Conversely you can try driving using the paddles and ensuring you make perfect gear changes over and over again .... and then see if that fixes anything. Technically the box will learn those changes as the preferred driving style.

If the paddles were used then the gearbox would change up by itself when engine revs got high enough. I suspect a wiring issue somewhere between the paddles and the gearbox, possibly in the wiring harness in the steering wheel known as the clock-spring harness.

It will go back to D by itself! If you hit the paddles (manual) while in 'D' it will change back to (auto) shortly after no user input. If accelerating and no user input, then it will hold gear until red line. In 'S' it will not change back, but will change at red line. Hold in the right paddle for 2 seconds to revert to auto.
    Cheers, Mungus.
