Spare Tyre Won't Fit - Aarrgghh

    Hi All,
    Frustration abounds!
In other threads I posted that I have moved from 265/65 R18 to 265/70 R17 for a pending trip to Cape York.
I chose this size as by all research, it's within millimeters of all existing parameters including diameter and circumference. Or so I thought!

My 265/70 R17 spare will not fit in the spare wheel well. Dagnabbit!

I reckon it's because the 17" are chunky M/T's, i.e. there is an extra 20-25 mm of rubber in the form of tread lugs and gnarl. Whereas, my 18's are either H/T or A/T.

    So, what to do?

I reckon I have only got one option - deflate the tyre and try to put it in again. Visually, I reckon I only need 10-15mm of deflation and it will go.
Is there anything else can be done to get that 10-15mm extra room?

No, I haven't got a rear carrier and can't afford one at this time.

    Cheers
    Ralph

Watch out for heat affecting the tyre if the shield is removed.

Okies. Left the heat shield in place. Deflated to 10 psi and persuaded it to go in. Deflating allowed me to deform the tread a little and tease it up. Snug.

I'm now intrigued. I guess my 265/65 R18 A/T's are about at the limit of what fits under.

Gordon German always talked about some larger tyre sizes only fitting deflated

Why did you leave it at 10 psi rather than totally deflated?

Thought I'd best leave a little in. No reason I chose 10. Just when I put the valve back in.
