It’s so easy to pull off that cover you could run power supplies. I’ve been thinking of running USB outlets into that handy space but love the Garmin screen which would actually work compared to the LR version

We have one that looks the same in our d3, it was in when we bought it,
however I have re routed the cables and run power up behind it, wasn't that hard at all, and the gps connection is never an issue

This is what i'm planning on doing once i get some service items out of the way, i'm happy with the factory radio but want the option to play music from USB and to run some Android apps.

Before the Garmin, did you have a factory screen fitted there or the space was empty?
I’d love to have my new GPS/bluetooth system fitted there, but my disco (bought one!) is a Disco 3 SE with nothing in that space currently.

Thanks for the link mate, that’s exactly the sort of result i would like. I’ll read it in details.

What a local shop (Sydney) has proposed me is similar to the kit that these guys from Melbourne sell:
Pioneer Apple Carplay & Reverse Camera Upgrade to suit Landrover Discovery III 2005-2010

It looks neat, but i’d like to maintain original radio system, and have the pioneer in the top space.
The thing i need to figure out is whether i can get the pioneer to do music/bluetooth phone via the car’s 6 speakers while still maintaining the original radio functional. Maybe using its AUX input and then all goes through car radio.

    Cheers
    Nicolas

On the discovery 3s that have the low line audio unit, it's reasonably easy too fit whatever system you want, we were happy with the garmin gps, so I removed the original head unit and fitted a double din android job.
Had a faulty one for a start, but the replacement is going well so far, it has torque pro obd2 on it, which is quite problematic, however most everything else is good, reasonable sound quality, good reversing camera, steering wheel controls, tpms, Wi-Fi and gps. I have installed exploroz and hema on it for when we go bush and they both work ok,
Biggest failings are obd2 connectivity, hit and miss wheel controls,(don't seem to work when it's really cold) and the depth of the unit prevents it from being tilted back far enough for the screen angle to be easier to view.
    Cheers James

The space in the top dash is only suitable for compact unit without a CD drive as it needs to tilt back.
Generic obd tools don't well on LR's do I'll use my gap tool with its app.

    GPS in Dash

before I sold my D3 I was looking at installing a GPS for city and offroad and I was looking at VMS. Apparently they have a unit that will slot in to the cubby hole. I used a VMS offlroad windscreen mounted unit and found it to be very good.
