I find the scuba gear fits perfectly in the boot with a 150l tub to prevent water leakage and 2x15l tanks, one either side.

I also wrap the interior carpet with carpet protection from Bunnings, it's $40 for a roll which will do the entire interior.
Peels off when you're ready leaving no sticky residue on the carpet. Tbh though, the place you're talking about is the only place I didn't worry about. I figured if I had to clean one spot in the car, after our Pilbara trip that was going to be the easiest.
I removed the rear seats first (takes 10mins) then laid it down.
It's probably due for a refit not as it's started to wear after 18months with 3 months touring.
Aesthetically, there's very little difference seeing as I have front and rear rubber mats and boot mat.
