I have the genuine thick rubber boot mat in mine and have loaded it to the roof with firewood, i wouldn't put my wet dogs in there.
Clark rubber and Autobarn have the cut to size mats or as you said from Bunnings as well.

						SupporterHi guys,
I am now the happy owner of a 2007 Disco 3... which actually looks almost new inside, and that includes the boot.
This car will take me to scuba diving/beach trips, meaning i'll put a rubber cover in the boot, to protect the nice-looking, soft carpet which it has.
However, i noticed the lower tailgate is covered with the same kind of the soft carpet... it will only take me a few days to totally mess it up if i put my heavy gear there, and then push it inside the boot.
I am probably not the first one in need for this, but i didn't see any pleasant answer on the internet: how to best protect this part?
I was wondering if there's any chance to replace the soft carpet by something tougher like rubber, but it looks well stuck within the tailgate.
The only purpose made solution i saw are those 3-pieces kit rubber mats in the UK, but it looks a bit messy (the regular boot mat doesn't fit snuggy in the boot):

Or this one, but again, bit messy inside i think (look for the photo where you can clearly see the inside):

I was thinking DIY, like buying some rubber mat from Bunnings and attaching it to the soft carpet with double-sided tape, but i am concerned it won't hold and just tear the carpet apart.
Any thoughts?
cheers
Nicolas

I bought a quilted padded rear cargo protection blanket that is Velcro’d in off a guy who was getting rid of his. It has a separate piece for the tailgate and covers the floor, rear seat and sides (up to window level). I gave it to a mate who bought a near new D4, as his wife has a tendency to wreck the inside of his cars by lugging all sorts of crap in them! Maybe check these online to see if they suit.

SupporterThanks mate, i saw this one but it won't do the trick. I basically will have to drag 25-30kg heavy wet gear thoughout the boot, it will tear that kind of fabric.
Do you mean your lower tailgate has a rubber cover, as opposed to a soft carpet like mine?
I remember vaguely having seen a Disco 3 S which i believe had a toucher cover on that lower tailgate. If that's the case i could maybe look for wrecked car parts.
The link showed the mat on the tail gate was "Stows under boot liner when not in use" that makes a lot of sense to me. No need to stick it at all. I like the idea so thanks for bringing it up. Dog. Dirty tools. Fishing stuff and loads of grumpy kids climbing over the back of mine often.

						Hi
You can remove that entire carpet trim from the tailgate. See Scott's Discovery 4 write up here:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachmen...al-release.pdf Although its for users with a failed tailgate latch it describes how to remove the trim.
Once you have that off you can get some suitable material from Bunnings or Clarke Rubber and cut it to the same pattern and screw it on.

I've just cut some vinyl tiles/carpet to size and attached at front and side edges with double sided tape. Pretty cheap, easy and very effective. Looks good too.
In my D4 I used the Land Rover semi rigid plastic tray, it has edges that stand up about 5-6cm. No issues with wet dogs, nor when one who insists on drinking sea water tosses it back up in the car. The only issue I had with the tray is that stuff slides around on it easily (including the dogs!), the LR rubber mat I have now in the D5 stops them sliding around. It does not cover the lower tailgate so you'd need a piece of rubber cover that.

This is no help to the OP's question. However, what I can offer is: It a really bad thing to let squid juice from bait to leak from the bag, off the bait board and into the carpet on the tail gate. Then best not to leave the car closed in summer at Monkey Mia for a couple of days......Took months to get the smell out....

Might pay to check on what they use in the UK For D3 "Commercials", basically has no back seats as they register them as a van, for some sort of tax break.
