Help please - I'm buying a used Discovery!

    Hello everyone:

First, thanks for all of the useful information. I've wanted a Discovery for a few years now, and have decided to take the plunge! All of the great information here has been really valuable in guiding my decision.

I've never bought a used car before, so I'm a bit nervous - especially since this will be the most expensive car I've ever bought.

I've been looking for 2015/2016 Discoveries, but they're a bit thin on the ground here in Tasmania. So I've been looking in Melbourne and I've found one that I'm interested in. Its a 2016 (MY 2016.5) SDV6 HSE with 58k on its clock. I'll be asking a friend to do a cosmetic inspection for me, but would also like to get an independent mechanic to have a look at it. It is in the Port Melbourne area.

So my first question is if anyone can recommend a trusted, independent LR mechanic to perform a mechanical inspection for me? I've found this list in another (old) thread:
    Melbourne - LoPiccolo Automotive 61 North Street Richmond, 3121 (03) 9428 6251
    Melbourne - Ritters 116 Highbury Road Burwood 3125 (03) 9834 3545
    Melbourne - Melbourne City Land Rover ** Lorimer & Ingles Street Docklands 3205 (03) 9684 1000
    Melbourne - Rangie Automotive Factory 14, 16 East Crt Lilydale 3140 (03) 9739 6989
    Melbourne - ULR Land Rover ** 1303 Malvern Road Malvern 3144 (03) 9864 3555
    Melbourne - AMV Automotive 1/513 Maroondah Hwy Ringwood 3134 (03) 9870 9904
    Melbourne - Les Richmond Automotive 41 Wood Street Thomastown 3074 (03) 9464 4094

LoPiccolo is showing up as closed permanently. Aside from them, is this a good list? And when I arrive on someone to do it, do you have any recommendations on what to ask them to look for, or should I just ask for a pre-purchase inspection? And would a pre-purchase inspection include checking the maintenance history?

My second question is that the seller indicates that purchasing an extended warranty is available from the dealership (Brighton Land Rover). Is this worth it? And would I have to purchase it from them? I would think that since it is an extension of the manufacturer's warranty, I should be able to purchase it from any dealer.

I guess that does it for now. Thanks in advance for your answers. Cheers!

Can’t be too scary being that new. Assuming it still has LR warranty and been dealer serviced otherwise find another that has.

    What could be better?

It’s new & barely run in.

Dealer will be delighted to sell you extended warranty but problems you may encounter from now will cost about same or less as warranty.

Move to an independent after warranty expires if you want to maintain for long term.

All we have to do is get/keep him physically better so we can continue to enjoy his knowledge, expertise and ethics.

Yes - his name has come up quite a few times in this forum. I didn't know that he was doing poorly, though. I was planning on taking whatever my new purchase will be to him to get the transmission fluid/filter changed (per the 8-speed transmission sticky).

I'm in Sydney so can't comment on who to go to but re the extended warranty. It's basically just an insurance policy. I bought new in 2013 and took a discounted extended warranty from the dealer. It was mainly a peace of mind thing given the potential cost of a major failure out of warranty. In hind sight I could have saved the money. Yes, I have had a couple of things done under extended warranty cover but they also knocked back a few things. For example the arm rest on my seat falls back past the upright. It was declined as it is classed as non mechanical. I've probably got back about 60% of what I paid. That said there are others on here who got nothing and some who have really got much more than the cost of the cover. Do a search in the AULRO spot below as there are a number of threads on it. A lot of course is rehashed but you'll get a good idea of what to look for. There are alternatives to buying from a dealer and they can be better value.

    Good Luck.

Sounds like exactly the D4 I would like to buy. I'm envious.
Check if the extended warranty is factory, dealer or totally separate. Factory is the best if you can get it.

If it’s the black one the ad is not 100% correct.

    It is actually a 2015 MY16, not a 2016 MY16.5 as indicated.

No idea where they got the retail price at over $130K from either, it would have been about $97K plus on-roads in 2015.

    Build sheet FYI
