My son has this size BFG KO2 on his D4. However his D4 has later rear shocks with their taller bump-stops which prevent the tyres jamming on the guard liners when on the bump-stops, unlike a D3.

TBH if you don't plan on fitting a rear wheel carrier, i'd be sticking to 265 60 18s.

Main reason being the larger sizes require deflating the spare to fit underneath, but when i did that with my 285 60 18 spare, it just got smashed on sand dunes and it hung down a lot. Pretty surprised i didn't destroy it before fitting a RWC.

If you have to go biggest possible though, yes a 265/65R18 or 285/60R18 will fit, but if you have the extra rear aircon, it may need to be modified, you'll be using an extra 5-10% fuel, and have the spare issue.

I'm not sure how people squeeze a 275 65 18 up there, i think they remove the exhaust heat shield from memory. So if you want the largest tyre possible at any cost, it's that, the 275/65R18.
It comes with the extra hazard of not being able to drive long distance on the bump stops if you have compressor failure. Tyres would destroy the liners.

    Cheers for the replies
I have a long range tank and a rear wheel carrier so the spare isn't an issue for me.
Thinking of getting a set of the new pirelli scorpion ATR +

Go for it then. I told myself i'd never go bigger than the 285 60 18 for several reasons, they've been perfect for me.

    1. They rub on full lock, mostly in reverse, but not excessively.
    2. Fuel consumption is as high as i want to go.
    3. Power, i wouldn't want to be any slower. There's a considerable difference in acceleration between a 265 6018 and 285 60. Any larger, causing less acceleration would annoy me.

I know there's not a lot of difference between the two 285 60 vs. 265 65, but as i say, i feel the 285 60s are right on the edge already in terms of the above, and the 265 65s are slightly bigger overall. Coming from a 2.7l TDV6 owner

    Good luck.

What brand of tyre did you go for? my head is spinning on the choice and I dont want to make a costly mistake. I'm also running a 2.7 tdv6 and keeping the power is important due to towing a camper trailer a lot of the times
I'm now looking at the D697's

so would a happy compromise be a 265/60/18 ? think im confusing myself now
    Cheers

I have the D697 LT's, they do wear down a bit quicker than the BFG Ko2s but that's the price you pay for a much quieter tyre. Was also significantly cheaper so at worst i'd say running cost would be on par.

If i had to choose between the 285 and 265, it would come down to price. If they're the same or cheaper i'd go the 285 because i like the extra float and absorption. It's pretty comfy. Was just saying i wouldn't go larger than the 285 60 18 basically.

I run 265 / 65 / 18 and think they are a good fit, don't effect fuel to much, speedo and fuel consumption compared to km traveled on the cars displays are near spot on, they don't rub except on full compression on the rear and its only slightly.
265 compared to 285 is a tough one, I have always leaned toward a skinny tire over a wider tire after a lot of reading and research, for some reason a lot of 4wders think the wider the tire the better, I beg to differ on multiple grounds but that is a whole other debate.

I run the 265 65 18 ko2. Unbeatable. No hitting etc. your thread was on tyre size and yes they all fit and yes I have to deflate to get it underneath. However these tyres are that good it’s the only time I’ve fitted it. What brand of tyre is a can of worms though. I think the new toyo rugged terrain 285’s are a good option too. Each to there own. Good luck.

Can you fit D4 shocks into a D3 to elevate the risk??
