Advice for AT wheels and tyres for disco 4

I’ve had one puncture in 20 years (on my own vehicles, had about 50 this year on the work LV) - happened on the highway between Berri and Waikerie.

Piece of rebar through the LHR. That was on a near new D697 and killed it.

Falkens have now been on for close to 2 years and not a problem at all on the gibber - touch wood.

On e went on a trip where a bloke with new BFGs managed to puncture every tyre at least 3-4 times.

Sometimes it’s just the luck of the draw.

I was a BFG user for years, and then had access to a plethora of brands so went on a run of testing different manufacturers and models.
BFG are a benchmark, long exceeded by many others.

Going first or following both have drawbacks.

Go first, and you may well find that old rail spike, sharp gibber or other foreign object.
Follow, and the surface is often flicked over by the preceding vehicle exposing items looking to wreck your tyre.

I'll also been on trips where almost identically configured vehicles running the same rubber has had one suffer multiple failures, while the other had no problems. Similar can be said for fuel burn between operators. [bigwhistle]

Haven't been on the forum for a while.

Thanks for the advice. I've had my LTZs sitting around for a while now and was going to fit them to wear them out as I was aware of the potential hardening and cracking issues on any ageing tyre …. might have to rethink that.

Interestingly checked the age of the Cooper AT3’s on my D3 - 8 years old and still over 50% tread remaining. But they are starting to crack - so time to replace.

First time I have needed to replace tyres due to age and not wear. Clearly not driving enough.

Spare, I'm guessing will go on roof, or on rear carrier if I have one on by then- which is possible as the 20s have heaps of tread and the coopers are as hard a rock so will take ages to wear :angry:. I'll need to protect the loom in the passenger wheel arch somehow and I have a GOE emergency air up kit (that never, thankfully, got fitted to the D3) to fit.

Now, knowing what I know now. I wouldn't go for 285s. I'd look at either 265/60 or the 265/65 (though this is off the top of my head, here is heaps of info on here about sizes) as they fit better and the 285s don't offer any performance advantages.

Thanks for the reply, and sorry for my slow response. Thinking 265/65r18s may be the way to go. I am not so concerned about width but would like a bigger sidewall.

If they are the original ones from green oval experience then I wouldnt bother as I have had numerous customers over the years with cracked wheels.

P.S didnt realise it was an old thread as I'm currently searching for info with regards to steel wheel options or 18" wheels in general for a late model D4.

IMHO
*I had a customer that has fitted a set of Tuffant steel wheels to their D4 a few months back and a couple of issues that are making me rethink putting them on a D4.
*One steel wheel the centre was pressed out of round and wouldnt balance, it was replaced with another Tuffant steel wheel.
*The taper on the lug nut holes look too small for the taper on the lug nuts so the leading edge of the taper on the lug nut hits the outer edge of the taper on the steel wheel.
*So visually you can see that the lug nut is cutting into the steel wheel rather than seating into the taper around the hole.

*The customer was sent 2 sets of alloy rings that go onto the wheel hub but they are so thin once you do a wheel change on and off its shredded.
*Even when fitting a wheel back onto the hub with new alloy rings they can get damaged very easily.

Keep in mind I'm not a engineer or anything like that and is only my observation with having the disco in for some maintenance.
