My much loved 2010 D4 diesel HSE is a wonderful car.
Using this resource I managed to eke out another few months out of my nearly 3 year old battery.
Its gone, dead and will not accept a charge.
I had a new Delkor fitted today. Started up after I managed to get the fob to mate with the ignition button, perfect. Thank you Google.
Went for a drive to do a few jobs, stopped and within minutes the flat battery message came up again. Bugger.
Started though, no problems.
Speared around to a beaut mechanic who cleared out a few error messages and tested the battery with his very expensive magic thing.
Perfect.
went home.
Message came up again when I garaged and it still shuts down everything.
Now, it's not the key fob as that's a new battery..
It can't be the cranking battery as that's new today. I don't have an aux battery.
It can't be the alternator as even a dud one couldn't discharge a full battery in an hour or so in daylight.
The Car locks, I've reset the windows, radio and clocks, all appears honky dory.
I really notice the new battery and how much easier it starts (780 cca vs 900cca). Just that warning!
Any ideas anyone?

Hi Steve and unfortunately a number of Land Rovers models, including yours, have a design fault where the alternators can flatten a cranking battery in as little as 4 minutes.
I found this out the hard way with my RR, and it has a larger battery than yours.
BUT, from what you have posted up, I would rule that problem out at this time.
You say you had the new battery fitted and then did some running around.
A new battery does not come fully charged and if you were doing lots of short drives, there is a good chance you are actually discharging battery during every start and not driving long enough to recharge the battery again.
If you have a battery charger, or can borrow one, try giving your cranking battery a good overnight charge.
When I replaced my battery recently, the RAC guy did a battery reset routine on his fancy gadget. I also looked up the function on my GAP tool and did a battery reset there as well. Could it be that the on board BMS still thinks the battery is flat if you haven't reset it? Just a thought.

Hey Rocket. Not at all. The BMS is important to have reset but won’t have such a dramatic effect.
As has been said when the alternator fails its essentially a short to ground and will destroy a brand new battery if not identified.
