Thread: Epb noise. Whats normal, what's not.

I’d say if you consider it a noise that clearly loud then it’s not right. There is the sound of a motor from inside the cable as it’s engaged but no squeal to it. If it’s squealing it’s typically an indication that the motor is over extending as the drum assembly needs adjusting

Yes, when well adjusted it’s a most pleasant low hum.

Pleasant hum? Mine sounds more like a very unhappy cat is stuck in the mechanism somewhere.

Before my EPB jammed it would make an extremely loud noise that would cause nearby people to stop and look.
After I unjammed it and adjusted the shoes it's only really audiable if I have a door or window open. It's a quiet wirrrrrr.

I wouldn't call it deafening but it's pretty obvious. Spinning the hubs by hand the rear left is smooth but the rear right is a bit catchy on half a rotation. I'm guessing the epb noise is probably related to the shoe mechanism needing a service. Hopefully that's all.

Mark, your post suggests you believe there is a parking brake in each of the rear wheel hubs.
My understanding is that there is a single EPB near the transfer case which acts on the drivetrain not the individual hubs. That being so, if you feel differences in smoothness between the 2 rear hubs, that can't be due to the EPB.

My D4 EPB makes a whirring noise which can barely be heard with the car closed, but can be heard clearly if doors or windows are open. In neither case is it obtrusive.

There is centrally mounted electric motor that activates brake shoes via cables inside the rear discs in a drum brake arrangement.

The shoes wear and need adjustment inside the discs. There is an access hole for this.
