The bump on the plastic gets worn through when it touches the disc, breaking the circuit between the 2 wires. The clip is just to make the sensor stay on the brake pad.
2014 TDV6 with 50,000 ks of city driving I presume as rear pads were worn out and disc well worn, replaced pads front all OK.
But the warning is still on and the sender unit looks OK! I know if I join the two wires that will put the warning lights out but i would like to fix the problem.. The little brass saddle on the end of the sender unit appears OK but I cant see how that actually works. The little brass saddle appears to have lost some of its tension but is still in place. Can some one explain how it works as two dealers couldn't or didn't want to tell me. thanks Peter

Hi Peter,
If the sensor bump makes contact with the brake rotor, this breaks the circuit and activates the warning lamp.
Usually you'd replace pads and the brake sensors at the same time, they're about $25 each and there's one on the front left and one on the rear right if I remember correctly. The leads plug into a connector fitted near one of the suspension arms, just plug and play.
If the rotors aren't worn beyond their specified wear limits, you can get the rotors remachined, about $30 each. It's a waste of money fitting new pads to worn rotors, as the new pads will wear out twice as fast.
So, new brake pads, new or remachined rotors and new brake sensor leads are the go.
Hope this helps
Eric
I just replaced front rotors and pads yesterday and sensor lead was still good but light is still on.

A hard reset or clearing all codes if you have the gear to do that should fix that is there are no issues.

My light came on just after the pads were changed as well as the sensor wire. The garage had put in aftermarket parts and it has been said that the sensor wire may not seat properly where it connects to the wiring loom behind the plastic inner wheel arch liner. No amount of fault clearing would turn the light off.

The light being on is not a fault, so can't be cleared.
Only chance is to fix it. IF sensor is new, would likely be connection.
