Transfer case oil. Smell and consistency?

    Hi guys and girls,

My TC has a leak and I bought some genuine oil (IYK5000) to top it up. When I got it I was amazed to see it was thinner than maple syrup, and it stunk really bad.

On removing the TC filler plug i smelled it to compare and it smelled like 75w90 diff oil or similar. And it felt like it too.

Just wondering if the genuine stuff is supposed to be so thin? The TC has been working fine, just low on oil. I think it had loast at most 100ml, but probably more like 60ml.

    Cheers

    Dan

    Gday Dan,

From memory its got the consistancy of cooking oil , only a bit darker . As a matter of interest - where did you source it from ??

Mine came in 2 x 1 ltr bottles with the label saying something like Land Rover special trans oil . had no other info at all. I am due to change mine again but haven't seen it advertised.

    Cheers Ean

As they say "Oils ain't oils" and that's so true these days. All our old ideas of thick gluggy stuff mean nothing now. If it's genuine I wouldn't worry about it.....

Thing is it comes in a semi transparent cylindrical bottle with no special markings with a paper sticker. Its not a special bottle or anything.

Yep. That’s the one. It’s so special it’s very un-special

You could probably fill it with Canola oil and not notice anything at 4,000km.

And FWIW Canola is a bloody good base for a biodegradable oil, but I don't recommended using it in anything that's worth $$, at least without a decent add pack Transfer case oil. Smell and consistency?

Thanks, was just saying that there are alternatives available that are just as good and reasonably priced.
