    Questions on D3

    hi all,

    1. Need to replace a dodgy repair on my exhaust tail pipe, just got back from muffler shop who insisted that the D3 has a stainless steel exhaust and recommended against replacing the whole lot due to cost and repair section that is dodgy. My question is, is this true that the D3 has a stainless steel exhaust system?

    2. Got a auto dim internal mirror which has 3 wires that need connecting to, but mine is a S model so no wires in the overhead for it. Can i just tap into existing wires seen in pics? Assume one is neg or earth, one is positive not sure what the other 3rd wire is for?

pic 1 & 2 are either side inside the overhead light panel.
pic 3 is the back side of the overhead panel.

I had been lead to believe that exhaust system was stainless, so just went and checked. Did not pass the magnet test, so mine is not.

Possibly for sunroof although from what i've read that if it didn't come with a certain option then the wiring wont be there for it, this is certainly true for things like the rear aux. socket but then then the heated seat wiring is there for the buttons.

I'll check but pretty sure its stainless, remember there are varying grades of stainless and only the better grades are not magnetic. Lots of lower grade industrial type stainless is magnetic but still corrosion resistant.

Most stainless exhausts use 409 stainless steel, as it’s malleable (I.e easily mandrel bent) and weldable. 409 contains more chrome and nickel than say 306 or 316, and less iron, and is not magnetic. There’s every chance that only from the turbo exit to rear muffler is SS. So parts are plain mild steel.

Don’t know why the muffler shop would refuse to fix stainless, easily TIG welded. Shop around.

    update on mirror

well what a nightmare with this internal auto dim mirror. Took the old standard mirror off the windscreen and decided to have a windscreen professional glue the steel button onto the windscreen instead of buying the glue myself. Note: standard mirror and auto dim mirror use a diff button to secure to windscreen.

Anyway finally catch up with the 'pro' who says the button from the old mirror cannot be removed it would crack the windscreen and they would need to glue the new button above. anyway they weren't sure of the orientation of the new button and needed a vice to secure the button onto the mirror, stating they would need to come back.

got home and put the button into the vice and done locked into position, then remembered last time i heated the button on the windscreen to get the button off. so less then 3 mins with the cig lighter and off it came. now going to sca to buy the mirror adhesive and secure myself. worry about the wiring another time. what a waste of time waiting around for the pro! some jobs better of doing yourself.
