Driving the D3 today and noticed what I thought was steam coming out the front of the car , typically the temp gauge hadn't moved , no low coolant level warning on the message centre , pulled over , no smell of coolant , none under the car , pop the bonnet and how the car never caught on fire with the air hitting the smoking engine I am not sure , maybe because I had shut the car down.
Closer look and the smell of diesel started to get my attention but couldnt find the culprit because of the smoke. Let it clear and a close look revealed fuel in the area of the 3 drivers side injectors. I wasn't far from home so cleaned it up and started the car and made it home.
Close inspection reveals that the front injector , drivers side , the bleed off fitting that fits into the side of the injector and has a small U shaped clip holding it in , is working loose and diesel is leaking and dribbles down onto the EGR and ultimately the exhaust. I recently had work on the fuel system done so can only assume that after having been disturbed it hasn't been refitted correctly and have worn a groove in the fitting, or the clip has lost some of its tension , but will speak to the bloke who did the work first before I start attacking it much more.
I am guessing if you were remote a well placed and tightened small cable tie would hold it to get you out of trouble , but I don't think the car was very far from going up in flames to be honest.

Are the clips easily sourced ? they look like a pain with the bottom pin being bent over , my next moved depending on what the indie says tomorrow is to bend the top 1 as well to hold it in as it being straight seems to let it move very easily.

Hi Ean, yes just got the number , thanks. Initially I bent them etc however it didnt work. I "procured" some from a supplier with what i imagine were warranty parts, destined for bin etc. How many do you want? I may have 1 left somewhere...

Hey mate , I have placed a strategic cable tie in position for the moment , felt like a surgeon with 2 pairs of long nose pliers getting in there , will call over and see leigh tomorrow and see what he says and will make a decision moving forward.
If you find a stash and have a spare spare then I will take it off your hands but don't see yourself short.

SupporterEarlier this year I replaced the injector bleed off pipes - nearly lost one of those clips during the job. I reused my clips and haven't had an issue with them coming loose.
I first noticed the leak when pulling up to inspect a house we where looking at buying - would have been interesting having the car burn down in someone elses driveway
