A word of most well intended advice - never contradict discorevy. He is in the top group of LR gurus along with JustinC and others! He also has a 2.7 (albeit RRS) as one of his runarounds.
I have 265 75 16 on my mildly remapped TD5 auto, and get a bit under 13 around town (Perth is not that dissimilar to Adelaide for good roads etc).
So far with the D4 (not towing), I get about the same as the TD5 with my oversize 285 60 18 697s, so you should not see a significant order of magnitude difference between TD5 and "your new" 2.7/6 speed. Subject to explosions, that is the benefit of the 3L/8 speed which gets better economy.
