Compomotive 18" Wheels.

So ... after much humming and harring, and checking what tyres* fit and are available/in stock, I just ordered a set of 5 Compo's from Performance Alloys.
They were very helpful and responsive, and I should see my shiny new set of rims here on the left-hand side of the continent in about 7-10 days.

And yes, I know I picked the worst time to order with the AUD bellied out, but needs must and there's an outback trip to be had the day after the AFL Grand Final.

c'est la vie ...

It'll be interesting to see how the AT+ go in the 18". I have the 19" and have thought that they might be a decent replacement on my 18" Compos once the LTZ are worn out.

I bought it about 18 months ago, and it's got 19" ATR's on it. They've never let me down.
I've done Karijini, some technically hard stuff on the local Powerline Track, and around Julimar (Dummy Spit Hill!). And many trips on the beach.
Plenty of other off-road and long highway trips in between.

The local Pirelli dealer got all excited about the ATR+ versions when I mentioned them. Obviously, he's got a vested interest, but he sounded genuine.
He suggested they're as quiet, if not quieter than the less aggressively patterned ATR's.
Pirelli are offering a 2 year road hazard warranty at the moment, as well.

I should add I have a long history with Pirellis on road cars. Never had any issues with them there.

I used to have 19" ATR on my first D4 but went off them after a rather scary wet road incident. I found they got a bit skittish once they wore a bit. Like yourself, others have had no issues but some have complained about the same behaviour I experienced.

The AT+ is quite a different tyre. Much more aggressive tread than the ATR. The tread pattern has nothing blocking water ejection sideways or front and back....so in theory should be better in the wet.

They feel like a very solid tyre and I believe they are a bit heavier than the ATR (reinforcing?).

The drive is very precise compared to the OEM Wranglers but in an 18" they might not be quite as sharp ... but I doubt there would be much in it due to the tyre's rigidity.

Definitely noisier than the ATR and Wrangler but it's not bad at all and the side mirror noise drowns it out anyway.

I'm enjoying mine :-)

Mine have worn quite a bit, and it's been raining here on the left hand side of Aus.
I figured if I have to replace the rubber, I'll bite the bullet and do it all at once.

Interesting comment about the noise. I guess I'll find out for myself soon enough.

Before the next trip, I'll be fitting a Safari RAI, too.
Can't be any louder than the old XJ Cherokee I used to drive. :-)

If you are in the market for 18" rims and you have recovered after getting a price on the compo's, Tuffants are on sale for half the price that compo's are which leaves room for tyres.

I had a look at Tuffants, but I wanted alloys. It makes them easier for the missus to lift when she changes a tyre. [bighmmm]

Also the Comps look like they are OEM, well at least on my Corris Grey D4 (mine are the Anthracite colour). Tuffants to me look cheap (and they are). Maybe more practical (???) but black on my car is not going to cut the mustard.

I've gone with black. The car's Ipanema Sand in colour with the tint/privacy glass.
The chunky black Prospeed sliders, and the roof rack and ladder in black suit it very well.
The original wheels look a bit out of place because of it. And I think even more so when I put a Safari RAI on it.

That leaves the grille, lefthand side vent and the lettering. Dunno If I'll go that far yet.
But I am seriously considering a semi-custom retro style number plate, white on black, to replace the standard issue blue on white job (which is a little battered and bruised on the front - not my doing). It looks a bit untidy where the dealer did a half-arsed job in straightening it.
