Are you sure on that? I own a Nanocom Evo with D2 and D4 licences. I have never had to enter or confirm VINs when using it.

Nanocom isn’t locked. You can use it to check your friends car also. Otherwise I’d never be able to buy a 2nd hand one
The additional benefit of GAP is custom firmware updates can be requested for certain things!
Unsure if Rovacom are offering this service.
If you mean updating vehicle component software, then yes. The Rovacom/Nanocom Genesis site lists all the software for a particular module and highlights which version was installed on your car. You can then download and install later versions. I've never been game to do this as all is running fine as is in my D4.
As for updating the Rovacom software and the IQ dongle itself, then yes, it automatically advises if there's an update as soon as you open the app. It takes seconds to download and update and then update the IQ dongle.
+1 On the Rovacom for me
Rovacom is still Android - I’m an apple freak
Good insight for others reading but Not what I was referring to.
GAP will write custom firmware for certain functions if requested / possible.
I have the full professional Rovacom gear as well as 2 GAP tools, and the GAP gear is my go-to for most stuff.
What I can completely recommend is installing Later D4 Terrain response software onto the earlier D4 systems. It makes it *that* much better.
Wow the GAP Pro is expensive. What makes it $2200 better? Just curious, I’m not spending that much
