heating alternator and high pitched noise

Did you ever get this problem resolved.. I am faced with exactly the same situation. I removed battery terminals in order to replace the coolant overflow bottle ( low coolant message) and after installing everything this comes up.. The alternator makes a high pitched howling noise, speed dependent...It heats up to the point of smelling burning insulation.. On the clamp meter it is delivering 39 Amps to the battery.. Hesitate to change the unit after reading your post.. An update would be most welcome.... Cheers.

    More often around 150-160k
