SupporterI’ve been driving the wife’s MY12 D4 around and cannot figure out how to turn on the variable speed front windscreen wiper.
The stalk has a variable speed twist adjustment from MIN to MAX with four settings in between.
Starting from the neutral resting position:
Moving the stalk down gives a single wipe.
Up once turns out AUTO which seems to generally be too fast for the actual rain conditions so leads to annoying squealing sounds. Adjusting the variable speed setting doesn’t effect its speed.
Up again gives LO which is just a constant speed that I’d describe more as medium than slow. Adjusting the variable speed setting doesn’t effect its speed.
Up again gives HI which is a faster constant speed. Adjusting the variable speed setting doesn’t effect its speed.
Pulling the stalk towards you does the windscreen wash function spraying water and wiping.
Twisting the end of the stalk turns on and off the rear window wiper.
Pushing the button on the end does the rear window wash function spraying water and wiping.
So what am I missing? Why is there an adjustable speed twist function if it doesn’t effect anything?

SubscriberAuto is not actualy 'variable speed', it refers to the 'rain sensor'. The rain sensitivity is controlled by the 'min / max' adjustment. When set to 'max' the wpiers are very sensitive to the amount of water on the windscreen so will wipe more frequently than when set to 'min'.
'Auto' and the 'min /max' setting means more frequent / less frequent rather than faster / slower.

SupporterAFAIK when the stalk is in the Auto mode, the "variable Speed" adjustment increases or decreases the sensitivity of the amount of water on the photocell to make the wipers work. Turn it down low and you need a lot of water on the screen to make the wipers do a sweep of the screen. Turn it up and they wipe more frequently and when there is just a few drops on the screen.

SupporterOn my 07 RRS that max min dial has nothing to do with the front wipers. As I have auto wipers their speed is auto controlled by the amount of water hitting the screen - the little wiper ecu reads this and adjusts speed accordingly - if you want them to do fixed fast and not auto then you turn the knob to that position.
The min/max dial actually controls the speed of the REAR Wiper and has no impact on the front wipers.
Maybe different on a car without auto wipers.

EDIT - just checked the handbook and apparently I may not be correct - the min/max dial does supposedly change the speed of the front auto function - it doesn't on my car. Supposedly the rear wiper is fixed speed - is not the case on my car - the min/max dial does actually change the speed of the rear wiper as I have timed it in the past on my car.
I must have a fault in my car.

On a D4 it adjusts sensitivity of the rain sensor.
Eg, how much water is on the glass before a wipe commences.
Beyond that the wipers will speed up and slow down according to the deluge you are driving into.
Yesterday I was heading to Pirie and got caught in varying rain, I have mine set to just off Maximum and it wipes shortly after a spray on the glass. As I hit the centre of the storm it turned them up to flat out and reduced speed as I exited the majority of the rain.

If the fuse for the rain sensor is removed then the min/max settings vary the time interval for intermittent wipers.

SubscriberOne other problem with rain sensing is when there's been no rain for a long time but you still have it set, and you go through a sprinkler for instance, then all the crud under the wiper blade gets scratched across the windscreen or blade damaged or bugs smeared everywhere.
