Just to put this to bed, I ended up doing a deal for $2,200 cash after passing on to him all of the info in this thread, given he had advised me the cost could be about $2,800 before he started the work. In the final analysis he is an auto trans specialist, and subbied out the diff, so I was happy a real specialist did the proper work. I was just happy not to have to wait any longer for completion.

So far since made it to Emerald with no problems (apart from these damned Qld road bumps).
