To find the one on the block requires the engine be lifted from the frame.
Hence the plate on top of the engine.
Try some fine Wet & Dry sandpaper to remove the rust.

Trying to transfer my rego in SA and the bloke needs to sight the engine number. He sent me away yesterday after 'not being able to read it due to rust'.
Anyone know where this is on the block? I'm trying to clean it up but can't find it. Have searched but no luck.

Turns out SA they need to see the block. This involves booking the car in to remove the starter motor and getting it cleaned with photos taken by a trusted mechanic.
What a pain. If any others find themselves in this situation - I am booked in to PCB Landrovers. Solitaire can also do it.
They take a few days to get in so make sure you book far enough in advance that you don't run out of registration... like I have.
What a load of rubbish they are telling you.
It does NOT need such. Basil135 and myself purchased interstate and drove over. The tag on the top is acceptable.
Where are you trying to have this done?
Cheers
Rubbish, like Tombie says. The SA "vehicle registration fact sheet" says to allow 1 hour and no booking required. Doubt they can lift the engine etc in that time. Both the plate at the windscreen and the vin display on the instrument cluster should be more than sufficient.

Was at Regency Park. I took the vehicle in and was sent away due to 'rust in the way of viewing the engine number'.
After speaking to Solitaire and PCB I've now heard of quite a few people having to get this done - maybe it depends on the guy at the inspection place but sounds like they're getting more strict and want to see the stamp on the block and not accepting the top plate.
Edit- not the end of the world though. I'll get all the fluids changed in the diffs, transfer case, transmission, brake lines etc and have one or two other bits fixed up while it's there and have PCB do a general check over.
Mine was bought interstate as well.
SWMBO took it to main roads(QLd),the guy gave up looking for it and said,it will be all OK.
I live in Whyalla, country cop (Pom) walked out, read the tag and a few $$ later it was sorted.

Subscriberwould be worth swapping the tags on the 3.0 litre versions when they get replaced due to cracking
