And this is why the key wouldn’t turn. Stupid pin rusted in place. Joys of not owning the car from new and keeping it healthy.

I guess the important question there is how the hell do you maintain that and prevent it from happening without regularly dismantling the door & lock? It's been a while since I pulled the passenger lock out. Can you get the cylinder out for a clean and lube without removing the whole assembly?

That's the lock from the tow hitch Brad. Regular drowning from both sides with CRC has kept mine working freely.

Used to get the occasional load of firewood from Vlak's when I was working away and didn't have time to go and cut some myself. These days we use gas for heating, and the only time I venture out collecting wood is when I am looking for some nice pieces for my wood turning hobby.

Will keep an eye out for you when you are up here.

I drove over mine by accident when out camping (removed the plough for 4wding). This snapped off the key flush. After several minutes of sobbing when my tears dried I realised that now it is permanently unlocked and it works perfectly without me ever having to find the key again!

    Haha
So in the end, I’ve removed the mechanism completely and of all things, a bicycle handlebar end cap fits the hole perfectly. I’ve now reinstalled it and capped it off to keep it clean. Now to remove it I remove the cap and insert the mechanism if need be. Now it’s completely theft proof as no one will have the exact cog required to undo it. Put it in the bag of towing bits.
The pin spring keeps pin in place. I guess one could say there’s nothing keeping the pin from moving back on it’s own now so there is a risk the mount could come out.

As for preventing it, I can’t see how you can easily. I guess a lot of wd40 and a regular open and close is your best bet to ward off the rust. Now I know how it all works, I could get it apart much more easily and replace the lock itself.

I’ll probably buy the rebuild kit from PowerfulUK so I’m confident the pin can’t retract on its own.

I ordered the rebuild kit. Don’t want to risk it falling out when towing.

Ahh, that explains the 4 wafers. Obviously wasn't thinking when I looked at it.
I use Lanolin on the lock and mechanism, and CRC dry-glide on the pin and body.

I might be missing something? 1200 kms of bitumen and no plans for any off road while there. The 20s seem the right choice.
