John, do you not have the electric version/s?

I only have the manual adjust, and there is a definite problem with getting the squab? right via the lever on the drivers side.

Having said that, I managed okay doing regular 5-600 km days at 80 pulling the block of flats around the north recently (21,000 km in 9 weeks and most travel days 10 hours in the saddle) with my wee 2.7, and at 72 (with the usual younger days overdoing it back problems), I'm a bit fussy about seating.
I did a few years ago drive from Sydney to Perth straight through in 3 days in the old LSE without any back issues, and regularly do 300 km (Margaret River) and 600 km (Kalbarri) trips basically without stopping.

No I don’t have the electric version. My 2013 is the poverty pack. I ended up putting 1” foam on the seat but still found the backseat like a wooden board. I find it fine for around town, but anything over 2 hours is just too uncomfortable.

I never had any issues with the D2. I’ve driven the 800km Adelaide to Melbourne with no probs

Lambs wool covers - the ones from Perth..... can’t beat them.

And you can not go aftermarket seats- there’s airbags

The back softens nicely when I adjust the lumbar support, is yours working ok?

Maybe I'm even more physically warped and twisted than you (but also not overweight), but I do agree the Discovery driver seating was much nicer, and always got out of the D2a feeling OK after whatever mileage eg days on the Canning Stock route.

How strange. I agree the LSE seats were great and I loved being able to minutely adjust them when on a long drive. Just the slightest adjustment seemed to relieve any pressure. And it was great offroad being able to quickly adjust your position for steep climbs. But I've covered over 60,000kms in a poverty pack D4, most of it long distance driving sessions with some serious 4WD'ing in between, and have not had a moments problem with the manual seats. For the record I'm 6'2" and sort of slim and have lower back issues (like everybody of my vintage!). But comfort is important, so I have no problem with the OP looking for solutions.

Good point Mike and maybe that's part of it. I have always had lambswool seats. For the RRC and the D4 they are top quality (the latter bought new from Eagle Wools in WA when I purchased the car and the still looking almost new RRC ones came with the the car).
The D2 lambswool were not quite as good, but the seat was better.

I loved the seats in the old D2. You could sit in them happily all day.

Indeed. Personally I consider the D4 a big step forward again.
