If its wet near the LH chassis rail corner then its likely the pump, these are easy to replace as access is pretty good with the fan off.

I'm running a spreadsheet where I track the components I have changed, and at what km reading. Adding in an expected component life and monthly km usage allows me to forecast somewhat what is going to be coming up and when. These cars aren't as unpredictable as you might think - for example the lower control arms started clunking the other day, and sure enough, they are coming up to expected renewal km. In the same way, the idler pulley will be getting old, and I'll probably just change it out with the timing belt, due for its second replacement this year.

But, every use case is different - if the D4 was the primary vehicle for all things, I would probably look differently. As it stands, the school drop off and shopping trolley duties have passed to an EV, meaning the disco can enjoy a semi-retirement life
100% agree... Biggest scam ever created on man - devaluing assets.. Second biggest scam - we need the newest of everything.

My D4s book value may be low (resale) but if I dont sell it that is of no consequence. If i'm chasing a tax break, perhaps a shiny new leased vehicle may help, but it wont help the fact I'm still dropping some cash out of my own pocket. Eg. A new Defender / Ineos / D5 / RRS will set me back an easy $140k. Even with tax breaks I'm still out each week by ~$600 for the privelege.

My D4 is equipped, reliable and has had less than $2k spent on unplanned maintenance in 12 years. All other expenses have been consumables or planned maintenance (mid life suspension replacement etc). Even if I throw $2k a month at the vehicle for maintenance/repairs its still cheaper than a new vehicle. And then if I purchased a new vehicle I'd also do the kit out - so theres another $20k odd I have to throw at it.

Found that coolant leak! Looks like the thermostat housing as opposed to the water pump. Loots of fresh and crusted coolant

As a guide, I replaced mine in 2019 and at it was already weeping by 2023. It was a genuine replacement. Damn stupid plastics.

    Good catch!

I’m so happy I did the hard to get one on the side a few years back.

My coolant temp sensor was weeping and has broken a lug on the sensor it screws in with. Fortunately just needs a new sensor to resolve but would pop out under pressure at some point.

Pricing up a full hose replacement project down the track.

I guess this is because it is listed under the “Thermostat/Housing & Related Parts” page in the LR parts catalogue and is the first item shown in the diagrams below.

Land Rover call it the Water Outlet assembly.

So no water or thermostat? Just coolant in a crossover. Good naming conventions What happened to your D3/D4 today?
