The D3 is developing a prominent "whine" which matches engine revs. It is getting worse, so I'm really hoping it's a bearing up-front.

The Aux belt, idler and tensioner were new last year, so I suppose that leaves the alternator, water pump, power steering pump, fan pulley or A/C compressor. Or worse, something under the timing cover.

Need the weather to clear up so I can get in and have a listen.

Pulled the fan out to have a listen and found part of the lower fan shroud displaced and rubbing on the fan. Clear wear on the shroud and marks all around the fan. It had been clearly moved and was being pushed in by the intake pipework. Of course can't hear anything abnormal from the front end now and a test drive after reassembly was probably ok. Now I don't know if what I hear is normal or I'm jumping at shadows but no abnormal bearing noise.

We went off road a bit up North and this whole assembly is loose and flappy, so I suspect that. Time will tell I suppose.

my alternator made a similar rev matched wine when it was on the way out - what a PITA to replace on a 3L.

Honestly after looking at the possibilities, the Alternator would be the cheapest and easiest to replace. I wouldn't be upset at all if it was that.

The water pump is probably second. The A/C compressor is a pig, the power steering pump isn't any better and the fan pulley needs the timing belt to come off to replace.

It has > 250kk on the clock now so it's probably due an alternator. I'll take my chances and see if it was the shroud or if it's going to get worse. I did think if it was rubbing on the fan then it wouldn't stay rev-matched.

Have a run down to Margaret River for a charity long weekend next weekend, so if it goes it'll go at the worst possible time.

Edit : No, it's still there. I can hear it from inside the cabin but I can't from in front of the vehicle. Might have to dig my mechanics stethoscope out and start poking around.

I've had a turbo vane actuator in one make a whine that changed with engine speed when the vanes were starting to clag up.

    I know that ain't exciting.

I know that feeling - although I had to have the turbo replaced due to poor re-connection of a hose (after air con system replacement) that ended up being chewed up by the turbo and vanes were damaged causing the said whine.

New wiper arms. Hopefully that fixes the short blade life and chatter that has been plaguing me for the last 7 years.

Another central locking failure, this time on front passenger door. Upon investigation, it's another cable failure - not actuator. This is the third one I've had fail in the same way, so I guess I should expect one more

When this breaks it will lock but not unlock the door.
