    2.7TDV6 Restricted Power

Hi All, I have a RRS 2.7TDV6, (I know this isn't the right place, but there is more activity here and it's the same engine as the D3). Have owned this car for 6 years now and the car drops into limp/restricted performance mode if you have been on the open road for some time and encounter a reasonable length hill using 2/3 to 3/4 throttle to maintain speed, it'll then drop into restricted performance mode. I can quickly flick it into neutral, stop and restart and the computer does a reset and all is good back to normal performance.

I'm sure this has been discussed, but can't find the threads and have never read anyone with a definitive cause and solution.

My independent in Melbourne now thinks it maybe the injector/s over bleeding fuel and triggering the fault code. Cost of injectors and not sure if this is the reason makes me hesitant to go down this path.

Appreciate feedback and advice as heading to South Aus at xmas fully loaded and know the car will do this on the way into Adelaide as the hills start, as well on the way out about 2/3's up the hill out of Adelaide, has done it every time without fail and we make the trip each year. Can now list the hills the car will do it on, or if overtaking with a load on, such as a full length roof rack or trailer. I'd never consider a long trip with a camper trailer, as the frustration would be endless.

Apart from this issue the car ticks all the boxes for me, but would love to get this issue sorted.

    Cheers

    Kingo

Way too many things give restricted performance mode.

Codes? surely that is pointing your indy in the right direction?

Test work not guess work, but the below is only guess work:
*low output on the low pressure fuel pump in tank.
*feed signal from said pump short to ground.
*fuel pressure sensor faulty (on the common rail, passenger side).
*Injectors will fault code if pressure sensor is faulty.
*high pressure pump solenoid intermittently failing.
*high pressure pump failing, see if there is any nasty metal bits ending up in fuel tank.
*gear on end of high pressure pump is loose (the nut can come slightly loose) and is slipping under high load, torque.

*low coolant level (its leaking out to the point of being very low).
*egr faults. (under load, more common on a 3.0lt though).

*A lot of the above can trigger a transmission fault which should be ignored until engine is sorted
    Regards
    Daz

Agree many things cause RP. Codes, we need codes!

    Btw;
OEM injectors for the 2.7 or 3.0 are way cheaper than Toyota diesel injectors. Last time i checked, LR injectors were around A$275 each including the crush washers and little pipe sections, plus freight from the UK, toyota 200series are A$1200 each.

I priced a full set, was around 2.5k delivered from Rimmer Bros for 6 injectors. There are 8 in a T200 series...

    Which model?

Injectors for them have changed over the years.

Thanks, I'll try and chase up what fault codes were found.

Restricted performance - go cheap before you go hard!

    Hi Kingo,
Dad taught me to try the cheapest things first.
This happened to mine a couple of times. Turns out it was a sticky turbo vane actuating arm. Especially if the vehicle isn't used for a few days and humid weather (or sea spray) sets in.
Simple as bending up a piece of fencing wire to reach/actuate the arm to the turbo from the actuator solenoid, (through the wheel arch on passenger side) a spray of CRC or similar through the thin tube that comes with the can, wiggle pull push wiggle a dozen or so times with a spray now and then and bingo!

Background: The turbo vane actuating arm/linkages seizes from all sorts of pollutant /dirt reasons, the vanes don't move when requested by the ECM (especially when going up a hill and power is demanded), the computer throws all of its toys out of the sandpit when an expected power increase fails to eventuate and "Restricted Performance" comes up on the info display.

Try that one first. Its cheap and will cost you about 10 minutes (once you have the wire bent properly and you gain the skill of locating the wire bend onto the right linkage point) and one wire clothes hanger and a squirt or three of CRC.
There are many threads with details but I'm on my way out the door right now so I cant help you search for that one.
If it doesn't work then it still cost you way less than one injector!
    Cheers - Matti

need fault codes to at least start guessing in the right direction.

have had the same thing happen in my RRS TDV8 multiple times, almost identical to what you are describing, either going up the Freeway, or Wilunga hill here is adelaide.

turn car off and on and it resets and problem sorted until next time.

my local mechanic pulled the the codes and it is the turbo actuator, so now taking to a Land rover Independent to get them to look at it/diagnose/solve for me.

Have been told the fault code is P2290. A code search came up with injector control pressure to low???

I drive the car with plenty of stick and it never occurs around town, only once it's been on the open road for some time and a decent long hill will it go into restricted power.

My indy is going to do a return flow test this friday which he says should show if an injector is out of specs.
