    Me Too

Like DiscoJeffster my D4 has clocked up just over 275,000km and is now 8 years old. Not really worth that much in a vehicle sale compared to the $104k it cost me when new! That said the vehicle has and continues to be a terrific ride. I have always maintained the vehicle as per the LR heavy duty work cycle with services at each 13,000k. The original changes made to the vehicle such as adding the steel pan sump and changeable filter for the auto trans along with parts replacement without question if it looked like it needed it has seen the vehicle travel and perform as one would wish / expect of a quality vehicle.

Currently there are no fluid leaks and my LR service agent (in whom I have great trust) reckons it is running beautifully. The timing belts along with other suggested items were changed slightly ahead of schedule and I have replaced all four corners suspension units around 60,000km back. I don't see or feel the need to go looking for a problem with the engine even though there is a bit of a history with the 3.0L units.

After a friend had his D4 3.0L engine self destruct I did spend some time investigating an exchange reconditioned engine from the UK. I reckon that could be a viable option if I needed it.

Recently I have been thinking about what to do with the vehicle.......sell it and get myself into a lower km (no longer got the loot for new) LR but I am struggling to justify to myself the change out of what is a perfectly good, albeit high km, vehicle.

In any case, I like others here, I don't feel the D5 is for me. The new defender does on the surface look O.K. but I tow a 3.3 tonne caravan from time to time and need to be convinced I will end up with a capable vehicle. Maybe a good second hand TDV8 Rangie is the go???? Could be dreaming a bit there me thinks!

Anyhow I reckon DiscoJeffster is most likely on the right track and his money will be well spent in ensuring his very capable vehicle is on the road for a long time to come!

Re the TD v8 option...try finding a good one! I spent near on 2 years looking and all were in various states of disrepair. Ended up buying a MY 14 Disco which is a better vehicle anyway with much more room and similar ride and handling if not better.

    You got it in one!

    gavinwibrow has it in one.

My D4 HSE has been serviced from the day I brought it home, brand spanking new from Perth, by Whyatt's Land Rover in Geraldton.

In fact it was the first D4 to be serviced by Steve, Shane and the boys after they became 'official' LR service agents.

With out a doubt, it is these good folks, that make the world of difference in owning and operating a Land Rover.

I have a 2012 SDV6 and have done 215000km. I have replaced all 4 corners with new OEM about 20000k ago had the belts changed, replaced the mechatronic and put a steel pan on the auto, had a problem with the transfer case and replaced it. I also have overserviced it but has been worth it. All the km have been country miles and very comfortable ones too I might add.
Having driven new Prados and Pajeros the D4 is the most comfortable by a country mile.
I too are looking at the feasibility of keeping it going if I have an engine or a transmission go buggerup as I cannot afford to buy new again unless I win lotto.
The servicing costs are higher than any other 4x4 but the comfort and power are worth it as I have done LCA and brakes twice so far. I too do not like the D5 so my current D4 will be with me for a long time yet.

    2010 D4 3.0L freshen up thread

Well I got mine back last night. Unfortunately I didn’t get to see the state of the bearings but the crank was in good condition and suitable to have new bearings fitted. All leaks seem to be gone with all new cam seals, crankshaft seals, sump gasket, rocker cover gaskets. A small diesel leak was also resolved with new injector leak off pipe work. The knock I had in the steering was fixed by super tightening the union that attaches onto the steering rack. Timing belts etc done.

Overall it purrs now. Definitely improved - most likely I guess with less bottom end vibration thanks to the crank being tightly in place - I’m also a believer in placebo effect 2010 D4 3.0L freshen up thread. I’ll tell myself it’s better.

And yes, having had the use of a Mitsubishi Lancer while it was being repaired, it’s nice to be home again in the LR. Next thing will be a gearbox valve body freshen up. Might leave well enough alone for now.

As some may have read, my vehicle had been leaking oil from a couple of places. To properly resolve it was agreed a body off would be best, plus new timing belts etc while changing seals.

Upon inspection it was found the crankshaft had excessive end float/play. Factory spec is somewhere in the 0.2-0.4mm range. Mine measured at 0.7mm. It was deemed that we should take out the crank from the bottom and refresh the main bearings and big end bearings. The top end would be left alone along with the bore/rings. At the same time all new cam and crank seals would be fitted, sump gaskets, rocker cover gaskets etc.

The plan is to hopefully get another couple of hundred km out of it, probably become a second car once second hand Defenders become affordable. That’s said, not sure why I’d then need two capable off-roaders
    DiscoJeffter.

thats a big undertaking - I am in a similar position (300,000kms) and g box looking for a rebuild. Wife does not want to part with it - and likely we will just keep the car in the family assuming it keeps going...

I may have missed in the thread - however what are you up for the job? a new engine not easier? (just wondering what that might be if possible). I am about to have this conversation with Rovertech (body off timing belts, bushes - lower control arms again, and g box/rear main seal. I had 2 turbos replaced last year... so that one thing I should not have to worry about.

    Thanks

“New engines” eg brand new, crate motor/bottom end is ridiculous money. Second hand lower km engine would put me at more money but same risks. Plus I’d still have all the labour costs in and out which is where a lot of the money was spent.

The bottom end refresh seemed like a sensible idea as I presume I got a good crank to make it this far (wishful thinking?) and the crank movement fore and aft (end play) may have seen it come to an end sooner with the eventual loss of oil pressure. With a lot of the cost being body off, plus I wanted the sump off for a new gasket anyhow (various leaks), then removing the engine was a given so bearings were too.

What happened today? One of the hose clamps on a coolant line wasn’t returned into place after my recent body off and I lost the coolant bottles worth of coolant before it was spotted.

These things do happen with so many connections to refit.
