At least he knew how to do that! Many early D3s were dragged onto tilt trucks with the gearbox still in Park.

Okay so I've done more research.

The rotary controller has and is proving problematic around the World for both LRs and Jags. Main issue has been circuit failure causing lock outs as well as led failures causing the green ring light to go out or flicker. LR has issued service bulletins for these and will replace the Trans Control Switch for free IF under warranty.

Unfortunately if no warranty then the dealer replacement is likely to cost well over a grand.

Seems the lock out mechanism loses power causing the solonoid to relax thereby engaging the lock onto the rotary swith in whatever gear posi it is in.

Early US failures were traced to dry solder joints and with some judicious resoldering the solonoid can be put back into service. The LED issue can't be fixed.

Of course the dealer will not do this as they are told that fault x = replacement of module y. ..in this case the whole TCS!

I'm confident I can have a go at fixing the TCS and at the same time install a rip cord to activate the release mechanism should the system fail again. After all the lock out mechanism is simply a spring loaded pawl controlled by the solonoid. Pulling the pawl back will allow the rotary knob to be rotated to P and then u can start the car then move it to D and away you go.

Marc on this forum will post a far more detailed explanation soon and I thank him for his excellent advice.

Look out guys...knob failure is coming your way. ... hopefully not when your on the beach at low tide😎

    Hi Eric,

I have posted my fix as a new post, hopefully it's helpful to yourself and others, I think I've also just discovered my green LEDs don't illuminate, might have to work on a fix for that too.

    Cheers
    Marc

What green LEDs? I'm guessing this question means mine aren't working either!

The green LED surrounding the dial is known to fail.

Yes led failure is very common and was the primary reason for replacement of the module under warranty...if you picked it up.

LR issued a bulletin about it some years ago. Make sure the dash lights rotary dimmer is fully up to bright as the leds dissapear on low.

The LR Engineer who designed the module has commented via a US Jag site that the problem relates to a failed chip/ic and is difficult to fix. Most Jag and LR owners out of warranty simply ignore it...once they see the cost of the new module. ..oft quoted at 2k or more to do the work!!

Wow, that green LED looks cool - I don't recall ever seeing it function in my vehicle!
