    Or just normal.

When I start my car in the garage the engine sounds horrible because of the noise bouncing around in the garage - likewise when running the engine with the bonnet up - sounds horrible - same when driving through Maccas with windows down - sounds horrible - normal driving, windows up - all is good.

Not saying there is not an usual noise that the OP has as I have clearly not heard it but the car runs fine and is still running fine - so odds are not an issue. Of course could be a developing noise but going from all the odd noises I hear from my 2.7 in different circumstances then my guess there is not an actual issue.

twr7cx have you tried running your car alongside another 2.7 in the same circumstances to see if the engines make the same noises and the noise is the same in both engines?

Please I am not trying to trivialise your complaint as clearly it concerns you but unless you can put you put this down to something and as your car drives fine then I would put it down to one of those things and just use your car.

    Good luck with it

Agree until the oil pressure light goes out it rattles a bit. Even more noticeable after oil change the oil pressure takes longer to build first start.

Absolutely. Sounds like a bucket of bolts without oil pressure. Presumably it’s the hydraulic lifters.

That was the original suggestion but I believe that the cylinder balancing offsets are within specs:

read through Gap Diagnostics IID Tool BT.

Sounds like your describing my noise. It makes me feel great about my Td5 - just about to clock over 300,000km and sounds much healthier than the TDV6!

Nope, I don't know anyone else with one. A mate had/has a RRS with one but the timing belt tension broke on the oil pump six months ago so can't hear that engine...

ALL the tdv6 2.7 engines are rattlers on startup, it's a combination of things.

And I suggest that any bearing /crank failures have very little to do with any failure of the oil pump on the pressure side of things.

And the other faults/causes are all very well documented.

    Cheers

Mine hasn't ever rattled at start up,dunno if thats good or bad.

If you want to hear a rattle, start a vehicle with the later model 3.0l toyota diesel, in cold weather, after its been off overnight.

Mine is near silent on start up, I'd be checking the cam chains as heard of a few that have snapped.

And what one person’s definition of silent to another is a cacophony of piston slap, hydraulic lifter pressurisation, hydraulic fan activation, etc. All very subjective and dependent on the knowledge of those who are listening and identifying the noises. On top of that, the age and wear factors.

My advice, if you are really concerned, just take it to a good Indy and get them to take a listen.

In this case a trip to visit JC would have saved a lot of conjecture.
